I am having a odd overheating problem with my 2010 subaru impreza. As far as i know when i got it the head gasket, timing belt, water pump where all replaced. I have since changed the radiator, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses. I have bled the system of air with a spill free funnel when the front of the car was elevated. I have used a block tester to check for hydrocarbons in the coolant which always comes up clear fluid stays blue. I have used a ir temp gun to make sure the thermostat opens and closes normallyand the fans work normally the system keeps pressure and draws fluid back from the overflow when the engine cools off. i have no lack of power and a couple of months ago changed the plugs and wires and checked compression. but it is not an all the time problem i can drive an hour plus one day with no problems but later in the day a 5 min drive will cause and overheat. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas at all about this since all that is mostly left is to pull the engine apart.

the coolant is clean i have flushed the system more then once and replaced the coolant after each thermostat change. and like i have said besides the temp light coming on have had no sign of a head gasket leak. No smoke or dirty coolant nor oil block tester comes up normal which is used correctly by drawing fluid out of radiator low enough so when the engine is hot to check from where the radiator cap normally is. i have checked the fluid to make sure it is good and bought another bottle to make sure. All i get is when squeezing it it goes a little lighter blue but once the bubbles in the fluid are gone it is dark blue again. I have no compression problems spark plugs are new and the ones i took out where clean just old and autolites and not ngk. also from what i know is if it is a head gasket leak it normally would be worse the longer you drive due to heat and shorter trips seem to prompt the problem more but it also is not an all the time problem and once you have a head gasket problem they don’t have a “come and go” problem.

Given the OEM tstat and cap, my bet is the Chinese water pump from the Gates kit.

it is possible but today the overflow overfilled and i block tested again and it came back positive. Dear old subaru dealer near me said it would be about $3000 to get head gaskets done with out resurfacing the heads or doing anything else. ie water pump or anything else

Well, there you go. Sorry to hear that, thanks for posting the resolution.
