Hi akovats,
Happy Friday everyone! Great sound for this video. I hear, what sounds to me, a higher pitch vibration that is occurring. I hear the noise mostly when the throttle is opened up. If you have a stethoscope, it might help to determine a particular area to look around in the engine compartment. Check to make sure any exhaust coverings are tight and secure. There is usually a heat shield coming off the engine compartment by the exhaust manifold. And, there is usually a heat shield under the car where the catalytic converter is. Use some heavy duty gloves (or something appropriate) to apply pressure to each heat shield/exhaust covering. See if this vibrational noise decreases or goes away when the throttle is opened up.
Have you had anything done in the engine compartment at all, since owning the vehicle? Keep us posted.
September 2, 2011 at 11:00 am #450923Hi BigC!
Thanks for this reply. My car is 100% stock. No mods, not even a K&N filter, nothing. The car is only 1 years old with 30.000 km (approx. 20.000 miles). I am its 1st owner. Beside the regular 20.000 km oli change there was nothing to be done around the engine. They used 5w30 Molul oil. Since that time there was no oil consumption. The engine works just fine, the fuel economy is great (6.5 liter / 100 km) and here in Europe where the diesel cars are in huge fashion, even on the highway I can wipe off the smile from the face of some bigheaded TDI owners easily with my tiny 1.6 liter i-VTEC… 🙂 So I just love this Civic. BUT this noise makes me go nuts!!! I am not so good at such technical issues, but my neighbour is a retired mechanic. Maybe this weekned I buy him a 6 pack Heineken and ask him to take a look under the hood. 🙂
I hope on Monday I can post some good news. Bye!
September 2, 2011 at 11:00 am #450924Honestly I didn’t really hear much out of the ordinary, I did hear some high pitched stuff but nothing to be alarmed about. Do you hear the noise inside the car or only outside with the hood up?
September 3, 2011 at 11:00 am #450925Nope..I’m not hearing anything alarming either. Is it a new sound from your vehicle that wasn’t there before? Just curious.
September 3, 2011 at 11:00 am #450926Maybe emissions equipment related? Many cars have air injection pumps and all cars have EVAP system purge solenoid valves that will turn on within seconds of the car starting.
September 4, 2011 at 11:00 am #450927Hi there! Thank you for the replies! Here is some recent news. This weekend we took a look under the engine, the noise is def. not caused by anything loose, like the heat shields. I am really sorry about that…
As I wrote you before, the high pitch cricket noise came mostly at around 800 RPM. (As I hit the accelerator gently) Now things are changing. As a little experiment, I filled the car with Shell’s V Power Racing. (Because it cleans the valves, and the block – bla bla bla..) Now when I start my car, it makes a little whistle concert. After it reaches normal temperature, the whistle stops, but the cricket noise stays now at idle too. It can’t be heard inside, only with one or two windows down. But it makes me want to sell my car. (Anybody interested?) 🙂
And one more thing that might be related, martens regularly pay a visit to it. They leave footprints on the chassis, and sometimes not just footprints…September 5, 2011 at 11:00 am #450928Quoted From killman:

You mean EGR valve issue? Can it be possible with a low milage car like mine?
September 5, 2011 at 11:00 am #450929Ok… sounds like a possible vacuum leak. your ” martians ” that visit and leave foot prints are probably rats and they love to chew up wires, hoses etc. I would start looking for something that got chewed on.

My visitors are actually marts. (see above) We live near a forest. I used a special spray against them, some electronic impulse device but nothing helped. Now I put 2 mineral water bottles near the car and that scares them away. (They think it is some kind of a trap I guess) This is a far more cost effective solution than any other… 🙂Ok, back to the original question, how do you find vacuum leaks? Should I try alone, or ask for professional help?

To me it sounds like your belt may be making a little noise from time to time, I bet if you changed it the ‘noise’ might go away.
September 6, 2011 at 11:00 am #450934Thanks for all the anwers and possible soultions. I think you all helped me a lot. Now for the rest of the week I will be off (just a small trip), but I am determined to close this “noise issue” as soon as possible. If you don’t mind, I will post a hopefuly final remark within some days.

LOL… Ok , when you said “martens ” I thought it was a misspell for ” martians ” and I thought that was jut some play on words for some unknown critter visiting your car. so now I know what a ” mart ” is ( cute little critter , looks like a weasle or a ferritt ) anyways, marts probably chew wires and hoses just like rats. if you still hear cricket sounds look for a chewed wire that might be arcing as well as look for any chewed hoses. btw- have you noticed any change in the way the car runs ? missing , rough idle , loss of power etc. let me know.[/b]
September 8, 2011 at 11:00 am #450936It may have a very small vacuum leak but, i would not worry about it.
It’s not loud and if the car runs and drive fine don’t fix what’s not broke ya know.T) -
