I have a 94 Grand am GT, I had a code popped up but I took it to a shop to have them pull the code off but they said the tester came back “could not connect to computer” Is there any way to get that code off the computer without using the OBD1 terminal? What could cause the computer not to response to the tester? (Wire, computer, or something else?)

        http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_i_check_grand_am_check_engine_codes

        “Paper-clip method:
Install a jumper wire or paper clip between the last and second to last terminals from the left on the top row of the ALDL connector with ignition turned on. These are the first and second terminals from the right side of the top row of the connector. The check engine light will flash codes. The first code flashed will be 12 indicated by flash (1) pause flash flash (2) pause. Codes will be flashed twice before moving on to the next code. After all codes are flashed, code 12 will repeat. Three consecutive 12s indicate no codes.”

Paper clip method didn’t work, as I said the tester was hooked up to it and it came back (No connection to the computer) I don’t know if it’s the wires from the terminal or the computer but I need to know is there another way to get the code from the computer (WITHOUT USING THE TERMINAL).

Sounds like the issue is either with the connector or the wires coming from the computer. Unless the computer it self has a port then you will need to get the wire fixed. Otherwise there will be no way to access it.

If the paper clip method did not work. Then check the
fuses for the ecm.The scanner that you used must be
obd1 compliant. I take it the car runs and drives?
sounds like a connector issue if the car runs and drives.

Fuses are fine, The scanner that was used was for a OBD1. The Car does run, nothing wrong with the connector. Jericho I do know you can take the computer to a dealership to pull the code from the computer itself but it’s costly so yes there is a way. Does anyone have a wire diagram for a 94 grand am gt 3.1L going from the connector to the computer?

Those older systems can be a pain. They do have troubleshooting in the service manual for not being able to communicate with the PCM. That said you can likely find a wiring diagram here.

I couldn’t see any that really could be read all that well, however I did find one but there is no ID to the numbers so I may know if it’s a jumper, fuse, or anything else such as P201, C100, etc.

However from the look of it,it looks like it is going to connector #18 on the PCM after it has tied in to three junctions (S217, S171, and G110). What’s really throwing me off is the wires themselves. All the wires seem grounded but I thought (for example) The Data Link Connector (DLC) had two wires, one for ground and the other going to the (PCM). This shows both wires going to the same places. Can you see if you can find what the numbers mean or find a better wiring diagram.

Instead of using a scanner try jumping the connector to see what you get. Here’s the procedure.
