Is there any way to pull codes from a OBD1 system without having a CEL? Not like its not lit up, as in the light isnt physically there

You should still be able to retrieve codes as i believe that vehicle has a ALDL connector.

Or…..find someone with a OBD1 scan tool that can read the codes 🙂

easier to just rip the dash apart. done it 3 times already so another wont hurt. all me friends have tastes for newer cars than mine none of them have a OBD1 car let alone a reader. i like old box shaped cars. NOBODY sups up a caprice, eventually id like to get like 500hp out of it. but not on that engine

Nice, id like to see a project thread when you start the upgrades.

I am a fan of the older cars too. I LOVE the 200 and 700 series Volvo’s 😉

You should be able to jump two of the posts on that port under the dash. then you will get a series of flashes. The flashes will indicate the codes. I mean it would probably be easier to do that than it would to pull a dash apart when you have no tools and have never done anything besides change oil.

i was trying to avoid that technique since it doesnt have a light to flash. the police department that owned the car before me removed it

Ok well I’m sure you can handle it. I don’t know where you live but it obviously isn’t anywhere southern cause everyone and his uncle trick those caprices out.

ive seen what they do to them. bright ass green paint with gold heavy flake and 29″ wheels but i live in oregon and these cars are hard to find now.

i gutted the interior completely last summer and swapped it out for one that wasnt so ‘police’ in style and way more comfortable. so i can do the work, its just alot of it and i didnt really want to rip the dash apart again.

That’s weird cause just earlier today on another thread you told me that the extent of your automotive knowledge was changing tires and oil. You also said that you owned no tools and only had a scissor jack. You didn’t even know what a scissor jack was until I showed you a picture. And now you expect me to believe that you are a master of interiors and body work, oh and painting. You also stated that you have been kicked off of other forums. I think I see why. You are full of it, why don’t you just play mechanic on YouTube where you can’t accidentally get someone hurt.

I’ll make this easy. This is a forum where people get help with their automotive issues. It’s that simple. If we resort to name calling or generally resort to this ‘he said she said crap’ then you’re banned from the site. I’d like to keep you both around but if this becomes a recurring thing I’ll ban your accounts and I don’t want to do that so please lets be civil to each other.

                                  Thank you.

thisisbuod sent a private message earlier stating he had me confused with another user. He apologized. the situation is resolved. too bad there isnt a way to delete a post after its posted.
