Hey guys, I have just a basic OBD scanner that gives powertrain codes and readiness monitor statuses. I’m looking for a relatively affordable ($50-150) intermediate to advanced standalone scan tool (no USB/Bluetooth adapters). I really want to be able to read live sensor data which I know falls into the intermediate category. I’m not even sure what advanced features to look for or are attainable in this price range. Would be cool to be able to access ABS, SRS, TCS, etc or adjust parameters but I realize these functions are likely reserved for professional/dealer computers upwards of $500. Any insight would be much appreciated!!

hrmm, well i have a innova scan tool that can read live data, it does pretty well for a hand held, it was about 250 bucks off ebay. I know my local auto stores have it on sale for 160 i think sometimes. I think i might do a video review on it soon.

I use a Snap On MT2500 Professional scanner which can only be purchased used now as it was no longer supported by Snap On after 2008 due to newer more costly and more functional models which have been introduced. They usually run $300 + – and have the capability for bidirectional control of the vehicle. I’m not a professional mechanic but I really enjoy having the capability to bleed ABS brakes with it, turn on and disable fuel injectors, activate IAC motor, etc for testing purposes and all the troubleshooting information that it provides for specific vehicles when it determines that a code has been set. It will give multiple possible reasons to check what may be the cause for the code that was set and how to further troubleshoot the problem. It will cover both OBDI and OBDII as well as CAN. Also will cover Asian, Domestic and European with the right software and adapters. It’s not just a code reader it is a Professional Scan Tool that only has coverage available up to 2008 though.

The Innova 3160 looks like it’s at the higher end of my needs (and price range) but very nice unit indeed. The 3100 could be a good choice, I like the price a lot better, but ABS functionality would be worth it to me. I’ll keep both in mind but I would jump on the 3160 in a heartbeat if I found a sale or something.

I’ve heard of the Snap-on MT2500, it’s very impressive and would be awesome to have. I really wish I could justify the cost. It would definitely be helpful but I think I can “get by” on something simpler. If I did this kind of stuff on a more regular basis I ought to have something of that caliber.

I’m looking at the Actron CP9580 now, I found one used for $90. It’s got all the live data tracking features I’m looking for and the “CodeConnect” feature is a nice touch. I’m in no rush to get one though so I’ll keep weighing my options.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I’m kicking myself i went with obd1 instead of abs function with my scan tool. When i went to school they had( i forget the model) a snap on handheld computer scan tool it was close to $5,000, they also have a genesis scan tool which was about 2-3k, they were great but i don’t think i’ll ever own one in my lifetime.
