So I’m interested in this topic and have been reading around. A few things I see against ethanol blends are that it burns less efficiently and it burns hotter. I wanna try non ethanol and see how my car likes it but I can only find non ethanol premium.
Firstly, could I put premium in my car? Could I wait until the gas is almost empty and put it in or is it not smart to have any mixed in at all?

And what do you guys think about non ethanol?

That video was informative. So in higher compression engines, you want a higher octane fuel (that doesn’t burn as well) so that it won’t combust before it hits the spark plug. If I understand correctly.

My aunt had a plymouth horizon years ago that would ping and knock on shut down. Also if you step on the gas to accelerate, it makes this weird noise. She switched to 93 octane and the problems went away. What would be the reason for this?

Could be that it was burning alot of oil, and the higher octane fuel kept it running a bit better. That worked to a degree on my truck, except I used octane booster instead of actual 93 octane fuel.

I was running 87 octane with “up to 10 percent” ethanol gasoline. My gasoline mileage was running anywhere from 31-32 mpg. So I have tried one tank of non-ethanol so far and here are the results.

Prior to my test, I used 87 octane gasoline with up to 10 percent ethanol at the same gas station. I drove all highway miles. One driver (myself) and no passengers and no cargo. My gas mileage calculated was 32 miles per gallon.

I filled with one tank of non-ethanol 87 octane at the same gas station. All miles driven were highway miles. The only difference this time around is that I have an additional 400 pounds of cargo in the car during this test. My results were good. After using this tank of non-ethanol, my calculated gas mileage was 35 miles per gallon. Cost for the ethanol is $3.19 vs $3.34 for non ethanol. I did not notice a difference in performance. Car seems to perform the same as before. Now I am on my second tank of non-ethanol. I will post those results when I am finished with the second tank.

Well I imagine that different people get different results. I think theres gonna be a mixture of the age of the car, usage, type of oil- so many different factors that are gonna determine the affects of the non ethanol

Ran first tank of gas using non ethanol gasoline. Miles per gallon was 21.5 compared to the typical 19-20 mpg using ethanol gas. Gonna run second tank and post results. So far I am paying about 20 cents more per gallon for the non ethanol.

Yes, thats pretty much it. It’s sorta how diesel engines work to my knowledge. the higher the compression and the lower the octane rating, the bigger the chance for a pre-fire and that will be bad. As for your aunt’s car, I don’t know chrysler makes to well so I could’nt tell you. You are not giving me enough information on what the noise is. Could be anything.

I havent noticed a big reduction in HP in cars and trucks but in smaller engines like, generators, ATVS, and snowmobiles it is really evident weather your running ethanol vs. non ethanol.
