Hi,
Congratulations for this site and its content, it’s really helpful.
I have a Ford Mondeo 2006 (I think it’s called Mondeo MK III in the U.S.), well a noise appears when driving on irregular ground (by irregular I mean lots of patched potholes), it’s like a pounding noise in the left front wheel, sounds horrible !!!, but disappears when I slightly touch the break, if I release the break the sound appears againg, this is only on irregular pavement. So I took it to the mechanic shop and they said it was the break pads, ok sounded logical, they changed the break pads and disks (Ford original) and the noise remains !!!, I took it to the dealer, they say noise comes from the dampers which does not make sense to me, what the dampers have to do with the breaks? (remember when touching the break the noise disappers), they want to charge me 1,200 Dlls to replace dampers, I’m getting frustrated because nobody can tell me what that sound is coming from.
Any help to light my path on how to find out where the problem might be, would be appreciated.

WoW… I would have thought loose brake pads myself. It still could be if the tech didn’t install the all of the necessary shims and abutment clips. Could also be worn caliper slides.
I would return to the place that replaced the brakes and suggest they go over their work. Nobody is perfect all of the time. If everything is ok then maybe they can find the source of the problem for you.
I would check for loose pads, retention springs. If not that it could be a bearing issue, Jack it up and check for play. I’ve heard bearings make all kinds of noises before…When you touch the brake the pads grip the rotor, holding the wheel true again and stopping the noise.
I would:
1. Jack the car up and check for play in the wheels (12 and 6 o’clock) and then 9 and 3, play in particular components will indicate the issue…Eric actually has a good video for checking suspension sounds…even though it turned out to be a broken engine mount.
2. If no play, check the brakes, make sure the pads are being held in correctly.Thanks Wysetech, that’s what I did, I returned it to the dealer and you know…they were really stubborn, they ensure the dampers are the problem. I’m going to take it to another shop and let you know the result.
