      Hi Guys,

LOVE your videos ETCG! You do an amazing job and you’re usually the first person I ‘consult’ when starting anything new on the car. I’ve become a DIY mechanic by force rather than choice when a car dealer ripped me off and then wanted to charge me

If you’ve got a cheap webcam, or a some other sort of camera with a decent microphone on it, you could use that to look under the car for you while it’s being driven on jack stands. Just point it at the suspected culprit and let the camera do the looking.

It does sound like something in the final drive but I’m not convinced it’s the inner CV as I have yet to see one of them cause a noise, vibration yes but not noise. That said pay close attention to the area between the rotor and dust shield as I often find debris in this area causing noise, the same goes for the brake pads, I’ve seen debris get caught between the rotor and caliper assembly causing intermittent noises similar to what you describe.

Got it, it’s coming from the intermediate driveshaft bearing. What do you think, complete replacement? (Cannot find part ANYWHERE!) or give it a good hose down?

You might have to go that rout as I don’t know that those are replaceable on their own, at least I haven’t seen them anyway.

Well no surprise it turns out you were absolutely correct Eric. It turns out wheel bearings don’t come out easily without a press so I carried it down to the real mechanics who swapped it for me, finally got round to puting the hub back on, sprayed the support bearing with WD40 to give it a clean out, packed in some grease where ever there was any sort of hole, and the noise be gone.

Looking back I don’t know that it didn’t start when I hosed the road salt off the underside, rust could easily have seeped in then… I have my car back 😀

Thanks for posting the fix. I’d like to point out that you really shouldn’t ‘clean out and pack’ a sealed bearing assembly so in the future you might want to skip that step. Thanks again for keeping us up to date.
