My daughter’s 1991 Honda Civic DX has an intermittent starting problem. It will start and stop with no problem for days and days, and then suddenly it won’t. Out of the blue. When it stops like that, turning the key produces a click and a brief fuel pump priming, but no attempt at all to turn the engine over. The starter is fine. The wiring diagram shows a Starter Relay in line with the Start position of the key ignition, and that is my prime suspect. Circuit diagram is attached.

However, I cannot find a part in any parts list that is called “starter relay”. The parts store can’t find one, either.

Does anyone know where this relay is kept? Perhaps it is part of another relay?

According to the diagram, your vehicle will only come equipped with a starter relay if it is a manual transmission (M/T); conversely, automatic transmissions (A/T) will be equipped with a ‘neutral safety switch.’

It may be possible that your starter isn’t “just fine”, it’s possible that a bearing might be on the way out. It may also be possible that the plunger in your starter solenoid might be starting to stick. Lastly, you may have an intermittent electrical open occasionally presenting itself in the starter circuit. somewhere.
