Hi everyone, I have a 97 Honda civic EX that intermittently won’t start and has gotten worse. It started around October of last year, the car wouldn’t start until I disconnected the remote start wires and jumped the starter with my battery power. The car was running fine until last week when it didn’t want to start again, so i jumped the starter again drove home and the next day had to jump it again, but later in the day the car started with the key. The next day I made sure all fuses were good, power was getting to the starter, the starter was grounded properly, the battery was good and the ignition switch wiring was tested good.

Then today it decided not to work again, i wiggled the key in the ignition and moved the automatic shifter and the car wouldn’t start. I’m not sure what else to test and i don’t want to fry anything by jumping the starter too much, any help will be appreciated thank you.

Next time the engine fails to crank.
Try lightly hitting the starter motor / solenoid with a hammer.
If it cranks after hitting the starter …. time for a new starter.

Already got a new starter and wouldn’t the fact that i can jump the starter mean that it works?

a.) If you got an el cheapo brand you could have gotten a bad one in a new box. It happens to everyone now and again.
b.) Aftermarket remote starter? Remove the wiring and go back to factory if at all possible or at the least double check ALL the wiring for the remote system and correct any shorts or opens you find.

Had carquest test it before buying it and wouldn’t me jumping the car through the starter eliminate the starter as being an issue?

I have a viper remote starter and i eliminated that as an issue by going to factory and the car not starting without the remote start connected.

If you know for fact that the starter is fully functional.
You might start looking at relays, fusable links if so equipped, harness and switch connector(s) or possibly the ignition switch

I tested the ignition switch and it’s good. If i’m able to jump the starter doesn’t that mean the starter is good?

Now days that statement doesn’t always hold true.
                    One question ..
When you turn the key to the start position, do you hear a relay click?
