Car is a 2003 Camry V6. It suddenly died at a red light. Towed it home. Tried to start it, as it crank you can hear a rattling noise in the engine. Kind of like the sound of a manual car as it about to die because you didnt give it enough gas. At other times, I dont hear any weird noise except the engine trying to start.
Replaced battery. Replaced spark plugs. Those needed to be done anyway. Checked timing belt.
Checked the schrader valve, no signs of fuel.Is there a way to check the fuel pressure? Listen for the fuel pump with key turn on. Cannot hear the pump with the key on, but I can hear the pump as I try to start the car. I should hear the pump running with the key in the on position correct?I also switched the EFI relay with the horn relay. Did not make a difference.
I’m stuck. Any advice?

check the fuel pump fuse.also put your hand on the
FP relay while someone turns the ignition on with out
starting it.feel if the relay clicks. check the fuel
filter if it has one.you could spray some starter fluid

to test fuel pump, turn key on the “on” but not to far where u start the car. and lsitin to see if ur fuel pump goes. it will sound like a bzzzz noise if u cant here it u got ur self a dead pump

But I can hear when trying to start the car. Does that mean a bad pump? If that’s the case, wouldnt starting fluid still start the car?
How do I check to see if there is fuel on a 2003 Camry V6? I cannot find a schrader valve anywhere. And the fuel filter is inside the tank.

Ear next to the pump while someone else the key to “on” position. But no sound. Pump only runs when trying to start the car. Weird.
If your car is getting spark and is making those strange noises when cranking and is not starting with starting fluid then I believe the fuel pump is a red herring. I would consider something may be wrong mechanically. I would check to see if one of your cams or something in your valvetrain is broken… not fun I know….. If you have a compression tester, I would try to check the front 3 cylinders for compression…. The rears are a pain, but can be tested by doing a relative compression test using a lab scope…. It lets you know if there is a cylinder or cylinders with issues without having to disconnect a single spark plug…. This test will have to probably be done in a professional shop….
If you have access to none of the above, you can try to pull the front valve cover and inspect the Cams… The front valve cover is easy enough to pull.

There is no schrader valve on that engine. You can break the fastener for the fuel line loose on the engine to see if fuel comes out when you cycle the key to the run position. It’s not accurate, but it will tell you if the fuel pump is making pressure or not. Here’s a video that I did on a Honda, the procedure is similar for Toyota.
If you find that you don’t have fuel pressure, the next step is to find out why. For that a service manual would be very helpful in diagnosing that problem as it can tell you where all the pertinent parts are and how to test them. For that you might consider a subscription to Mitchell1 for your vehicle.
