Eric I need your help again please. I am the one who changed oil to royal purple and lost oil pressure when the oil dislodged carbon off my pistons and ran it through my bearings scoring them to hell, hopefully you remember that, I just installed a new long block I bought and it wont start, getting some back fires and the engine is hydro locking (can smell fuel) just like the timing being off but I have 3 coil packs on a 1997 chevy malibu 3.1 v6. I did replace both crankshaft sensors one in the side of the block and the other at the harmonic balancer and also the harmonic balancer, and cam shaft sensor. and also a new instrument cluster (also another problem is I replaced the check oil level sensor and instrument cluster because my check oil light does not ever come on) and I have never had this kind of problem on my car almost everything is new, I have replaced everything. checked all wires made sure they are connected, could they not have my timing marks lined up and be a tooth off or could it be electrical ( car ran fine before new block just low oil pressure). Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated.

“I just installed a new long block I bought and it wont start…”

Please tell us what “new” means to you. Is it a remanufactured engine, or a salvage yard pick?

And, for your benefit, the smell of fuel is not a symptom of “hydro locking”. If the engine was hydraulically locked, it wouldn’t rotate. It happens when a cylinder becomes filled with liquid (usually water or oil).

Reman “better than factory” I was told. It is cranking and popped a couple of times with a back fire, the hydrolocking or slow crank sounds like if the timing was way off.

Glad you figured it out and reported back.

No wonder it sounded like the slow cranking of way off timing—it actually was.

It’s shocking how often brand new parts are defective, nowadays.
