I’m having an issue with my 98 Camry. Lately, when I put the key in the acc position, nothing has power. I do this to listen to the radio with the engine off, but I cannot do this now. My car has automatic locks. They are supposed to lock when the key goes through the acc position. They no longer lock. They try to lock, but won’t (they act like they’re not getting enough power or something, they move, but not far enough to lock the doors). Once the car is started, the button works normally. Do you have any idea how I might diagnose this?

Your best way to diagnose this is with a wiring diagram and a meter/test light. I would imagine it is something in the ignition switch or a ground, but a good diagnosis is much better than firing the parts cannon at it.

My thinking was also an ignition switch. I replaced that and it did not fix the issue. I now believe that that is not the issue. The car randomly just does not have power and acts as though no battery is in the car at all. Nothing has power, and of course it won’t start when this happens. However it will randomly just decide to start when I turn the key. When it starts it does not die though. My thinking was some kind of ground issue or an issue with one of the battery cables. I have not begun to test this yet though.
