My son has a 2003 Dodge Caravan that is having problems with his heating system. His fan runs well but when he calls for heat, he’ll get cold air for some time before getting warm air. The warm air will only last for a short time before returning to cold again. The fact that he does get heat at some time even if it is for a short time makes me think that this might be an electrical issue, either at the temp. control or some solenoid malfunctioning and not holding a vent door open. I’m just guessing here though. Does anyone have experience with the inner works of the heating system? Where would be a good place to start poking around?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First make sure it is not low on coolant then check the upper and lower radiator hoses to make sure they are getting hot then check the heater hoses in and out of the cabin to make sure they are getting hot. Only if all the above are positive would I look for something inside / electrical at a problem.
I checked the coolant level as you suggested and it was quite low. We filled the rad with coolant then tested for heat. Problem solved! Note to self: Start with the simple things first, then move on to the more difficult possibilities. Thanks Jotmon1 for the great advice!
