Bad valves can cause no compression. If you really want to make sure the valves are bad Eric made a great video about how to perform a leak down test. With this test you will know exactly why there is no compression in a motor (blown piston rings, bad exhaust or intake valves.).

400 dollars for labor is reasonable since I’ve heard labor for just a valve check (even if there is no adjustment necessary) can range in that price.

+1 on the leak down test.
What happened? Did the timing belt break?

If the belt skipped, it’s a very real possibility you bent valves. Here’s Eric’s vid on how to do your own compression test.

              Good luck.

ok what i dont get is how can be he be so sure without doing a leak down test i understand from what i know that when your valves break down you get water in your oil pan is this true or not also when i bought the car timing was a lil off and the day before my car gave out i accidently picked up the car to 120 on the freeway now he says is 400 for labor plus the head at the junk yard oil antifreeze and that stuff does ot sound about right he said about 600 or 700 dollars

Uh… Your having broken (bent) valves won’t lead to water in your oil. If you bought the car with the timing belt off a tooth and ran it to 120 mph, then yeh, you’re head is probably fuct. I’m not sure if I’m reading your post right though…

Yea lets focus on one thing at a time, first do the leak down to determine what’s going on with the mechanical health of the engine that way you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with. You can just replace the bad valves rather than the entire cylinder head and there may only be a couple that are bad, this could save you a bit of expense.

Bent valves don’t cause water to get into your oil and to be honest I’m having trouble determining what the rest of your statement means on that post but if you have water in your oil in addition to bent valves perhaps it’s time to replace the engine or the car.
