Rob’s second video hits the nail on the head if you ask me.
Gimmick to keep you coming back to the same tire shop.

I’ve touched on this in the past. 80% of the air you breath is nitrogen. That’s the same amount that gets compressed and put into tires with a conventional air compressor. The only place 100% nitrogen might make a difference is in race applications. For a street car, it doesn’t make much difference.

            Thanks for the suggestion.

Nitrogen inflation is a technical method which has been imported from the realm of aircraft maintenance.

Since 100% nitrogen gas is moisture-free, an aircraft’s tires won’t become ice cube trays at altitude. Also, because of the tight engineering landscape available, an aircraft’s wheel brakes tend to be relatively small, are stuffed inside the rim and under-cooled, are prone to overheating in normal use, and brake fires are surprisingly common. Since nitrogen doesn’t support combustion, the tire’s pressurized contents actually help to smother the fire when the overheated tire blows. (Aircraft tire sidewalls are fitted with “blowout plugs” for this very reason. Better to have a flat tire than a blazing magnesium rim.)

When it comes to automotive use, the benefits of nitrogen inflation are largely theoretical, and whatever small real-world benefits it does provide are more than cancelled out by the increased expense and inconvenience of using nitrogen. You’re better off using standard compressed air, a good tire gauge, and by checking your inflation pressures often. If you find a garage or other outlet that actually goes through the trouble of stripping the moisture from their compressed air, so much the better, and send them a card at Christmas.
