      Hey guys,

My CEL turned on two days ago and I pull up a manufacturer-specific code: P1138 Swirl Control Valve on my 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8L.
I checked and there is a TSB on that code for this vehicle. I am not experiencing any drivability issues. TSB said to reprogram ECM. Do I have to or just clear the code?
      Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.

I’ve done two of these haha. I believe there is a resistance test to check the swirl control valve. They tend to break a lot lol. BUT if you’re not having any driveability issues like you said, you can just take it to the dealer so they can reprogram the ECU.

What would be the symptoms of a bad swirl control valve?
From what I read it was lower fuel economy and slightly higher emissions. Is there anything else?

Hey CollegeMan can you send me the pdf because the link does not open on my computer. Thanks, all is appreciated.

As in your case, the cars weren’t immediately effected. I think I actually worked on one of the cars at least a few months after the code came on, because the customer didn’t feel a driveability issue. It wasn’t until the car started having a crank, no start condition. After that, it left her stranded in a mall parking lot lol. The other car was also a crank, no start condition, but it occurred much sooner than the other.

A crank, no start for the valve, or because it created an ever bigger problem? What was the fix? R&R control valve?

Yeah, crank, no start because of the valve. R&R of the valve fixed it, but it’s the whole bottom manifold that you have to buy, because the dealer doesn’t sell the valve alone. At least not when I got ’em 🙁
