Alright so I’ve been bashing my head against a wall with this car for months, originally it was missing and fresh spark plugs fixed that issue however now there’s a frustrating and very difficult problem to diagnose. The car in question is a 2005 Nissan Pulsar (I believe in america it’s badged as the “Almera”).

It has an intermittent problem where the car will not shift out from first gear whilst in drive, if no traffic is around and I persevere long enough it usually does shift up after 5-20 seconds revving around 3000-4500rpm with the accelerator depressed maybe 10-20% if that, usually in heavy traffic I have to pull over, pull the key out and start again, this typically works too. I will also note 2 other possibly related issues, sometimes while driving along the car will rev little between gears (upshifting) almost as if at the moment of shifting gears the car couldn’t decide what it was meant to do. The other issue being that the cruise control will regularly drop out for no reason and loses memory of the speed it was set to, the “res” button will not bring it back to the previously set speed, the set button will put it back in cruise but will typically drop out again fairly soon followed by the “set” light on the dash flashing at me.

      Measures taken so far:
I have consulted with a local mechanic and auto electrician to try diagnose the problem as best I can with the limited budget I can currently work with, both of then have connected a scan tool and found the only code that comes up is a “p1574” which upon googling refers to a potential issue which may be related to the speed sensor which i have recently replaced and hasn’t helped, possible issue in the engine or transmission control modules or combination meter in the dash. Just today I’ve checked all the connectors at the TCM and combination meter and found no visible signs of damage or deterioration.

I feel the most concerning part of the process so far though is that neither the workshop manual nor internet acknowledge the “p1574” code actually exist for this model of Nissan.
Any possible insight, info advise or help will be much appreciated as at this point I’m honestly feeling that the code may be misleading me since it’s not mentioned in the workshop manual and starting to believe at some point a previous owner may have installed a control module from an altima or something else in the car, please help.

        ???????????

        P1574 Nissan Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives two vehicle speed sensor signals via Communication Area Network (CAN) communication line. One is sent from combination meter, and the other is from TCM (Transmission control module). The ECM uses these signals for Automatic Speed Control Module (ASCD) control.

Yes I’ve found the same description online regarding the code, the confusing part is that I’ve got a copy of the full workshop manual, which lists out dozens of codes yet the 1574 isn’t in this vehicles manual for some reason. My auto elec was equally as confused when he entered the vehicle details into his scan tool and it found the code but the scanner itself couldn’t find the code existing in the pulsar or almera database.
As a last ditch for now I’ll change out the atf tomorrow, I was always under the impression it was fairly new and clean but supposedly clear fluid may be a sign of it being old and who knows, might be related to the occasional soft gear shift rather than the firm shifts and might be responsible for it not shifting from 1st to second.

            full workshop manual
Would that be the Factory Service Manual or 3rd party manual ?

I can tell you that the FSM from Nissan for my 2002 Xterra lists all alphabetical & P No. index for DTC codes for the engine in the
Engine Control System ( Section EC ) and transmission codes in the Automatic Transmission ( Section AT )

Yes that would be it, has the at, ec, el sections including the error codes and the diagnosing process along with methods to solve but i just had a look and saw this version was published in 2001, I guess they may have changed a few things when they did the series 2.

I’ll change out the atf and hope that does the car some good then do some further trouble shooting with the TCM and combination meter when I can find cheap parts or a person willing to let me borrow bits from their car to help with the process of elimination.
