So the Avalanche in my picture had a untimely death due to a Pokémon go user during the craze. So I had to get a replacement vehicle that could replace the Avalanche. So I bought a brand new 2016 Ram 1500 4×4 with the Hemi and 8 speed automatic trans. I’ve had the truck just over 4 months now, it has 3500 miles on it. My main concern is just how many miles would I want to put on it before I hook to the travel trailer? This being my first new vehicle I’d like to keep it problem free as long as possible. Ram claims this is capable of towing 10000lbs. The travel trailer is about 8000 loaded.

With 3,500 miles, the break-in is done for the most part. I would do a oil/filter change to get rid of anything that may have gotten in the oil in those first 3,500 miles. The tow rating depends on the various truck options. The highest ratings are the standard cab, hemi with optional 3.92:1 gear ratio. I think all the versions with the 3.92:1 gear ratio are rated over 10,000 lbs. the models with the 3.21:1 gear ratio look to be rated a bit over 8,000 lbs?
Does it have the tow package with brake controller?
Man these new trucks are crazy expensive!

It did come loaded with the 3.92 axle, class 5 hitch, brake controller, tow mirrors, and back up camera. I got this truck for a song I won’t hurt anyone’s feeling by sharing the price I paid. I’m sure the dealer still made a small profit but I feel good about it. If it breaks it’s under warranty this is the biggest positive about this truck.

Do an oil change, hook the trailer and let her eat. The factory has heat cycled and done most of the break in prior to delivery to the dealer.

Sorry about the old truck, but You will be happy with the new ride. The new dodge is peppy.

Sounds like a nice truck. My wife asked me if I wanted to get a new truck, and I said no way, this one is paid for.
It’s a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Laramie Quad cab, long bed 4×4 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine. It has been a good truck so far (only 125,000 miles),
but I just replaced the ball joints on it.

Yeah I love the fuel mileage it get empty on the highway. The ECO mode it absolutely amazing. I’m fairly certain that I won’t be seeing that while towing the trailer. But you are also right about the amount of power it has. It’s really amazing that it is as quick as it is. I have no issues with merging or passing traffic. :woohoo:

If you are planning on keeping this truck for many years, go ahead and change the transmission fluid soon too. I would do a good trip hailing the trailer, and then change the transmission fluid after that. I know that Dodge probably won’t recommend changing the fluid until it hits 36,000 or more, but if you change it before 10k, you by all the initial break in dirt and debris out of the transmission.

Break in procedures have been in every owners manual since time immemorial.

If you’ve driven consistently normal since purchase, I’d recommend swapping your oil filter for a new one then let her rip with the trailer. Ah, the “break-in’ period.

Edit: Hockeyclark: For some reason I never saw a break-in period in my ’93 Camry’s manual. Time to re-read?
