      Hi,

Lately my starter has been grinding for a sec when I turn the car one after it has been sitting over night, worse when it’s cold out. I put a new (used) starter in yesterday and it still made the grinding noise this morning.

Had the battery load tested at partsource yesterday and everything passed, battery had 12.42 Volts.

Now I’m clueless as to what is going on. Any suggestions?

      Thanks

        some starters require shims.

Right, but a car with 75,000k on it wouldn’t suddenly require shims only when it is cold out. Would it?

I guess I’m saying the lack of shims (it had none on the old starter) wouldn’t be related to starting issues with temperature or sitting time. Unless they would, but if you think they would, could you please explain how.

          Thanks!

If you changed the starter and it still grinds, then it’s probably a bad tooth on the flywheel ring gear.

Take the starter off, shine a flashlight on the ring gear, and turn the engine over slowly with a wrench and inspect every tooth.
