HELLO!I have been a mechanic for 42 years. I started out in dealerships for the first 10 years and I went to all the factory schools they would send me to. I’ve had 2 gas stations and 1 repair shop but now I’m semiretired. At 64 I’ve learned one of my best tools I ever had was being a good communicator. Communication is one of the most important tools a good mechanic can have. Being on the same page with the customer is important. Asking the right questions will not only help you but the customer as well. So before getting into all that high tech stuff ask the basics. When does your problem happen? Hot, cold, slow, fast, and so on. This will help you get your problem fixed right the first time and it will keep your customers happy! bruce8492

Hey Bruce. I have been a tech for around the same amount of time as you. I’m 63 and am trying to retire but can’t yet. Just a struggle to stay employed. They all want younger, faster guys. Recently I have been reduced to light duty work with a huge decrease in pay because I have 2 torn up shoulders, from the years of abuse.

I really enjoy trying to help others here as well as help Eric answer some of the questions. I figure, If can’t get paid for my experience and knowledge at work anymore I might as well give it away for free here. I hope it helps others who don’t have the means to pay for repairs.

Hey wysetech, I feel like you’re living my life !I worked for a few dealerships when I was younger but didn’t like all that friction between mechanics. So I opened my own gas station, a Gulf. Life was good back then.(1984) When the economy went bad in 2009 from those greedy people on Wall St., I decided I could’nt keep on losing money so I took an early retirement I took a part time job delivering parts but it doesn’t pay much. I can’t seem to find a part time job as a mechanic. They look at me like I have two heads!!!!!!! I guess a guy with over 40 years of experience, good attitude, doesn’t count for much today. BUT I KEEP LOOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to you and any others in our position.bruce8492
