I think the software running this forum is not really up to snuff. There’s a bunch of functionality that people expect that’s just not here. Most popular forums are running some version of vBulletin so that’s one way to go.
Anybody else feel the same?

I agree with spelunkerd, the priceless part is about the people and what they have to offer and share so give it up to Eric for doing a great job to bring everyone together. Also i guess it will get better in time to come, but the most important part is people get to communicate with each other, lets face it, its better than nothing.T)
September 18, 2011 at 11:00 am #450172PhpBB3 is pretty good and free. Most other sites use it or Vbulletin.
My main gripe is how you just can’t seem to post a URL and have it work, the forum tries to be “smart” and do something with it and it ends up not working.
September 18, 2011 at 11:00 am #450169Yeah IPB or VBulletin have the most features not just for users but for moderators and admins as well. It could make things a little easier around here. There are a lot of features or perhaps just settings on this forum that I don’t like such as not being able to edit an old post or even one that I just made. The swear word filters are way too restrictive and have even seen Eric get censored. Don’t get me wrong the forum is nicely made but lacking in features that most of today’s forum users expect.
September 18, 2011 at 11:00 am #450170I don’t know anything about software, except to know that it can be expensive. There isn’t a huge budget for this group, and so I’m happy to put up with bare bones functionalitiy in the interest of economy. I drive a 12 year old truck, and I don’t really care that it doesn’t have everything. I learned how to manually subscribe to topics that I contribute to, and that is the main point from my perspective.
The priceless part of this forum is all about the people, and only a little to do with software.
September 19, 2011 at 11:00 am #450173To be honest this is the first forum I’ve really taken any interest in so I don’t know a whole lot about what’s out there but the reason we have this ‘suggestion box’ is for things just like this so keep the suggestions coming and we will continue to make improvements to make things better. I’ll look into the software you suggest and see if we can implement it.
September 20, 2011 at 11:00 am #450174A lot of the forums that use those programs, if you for example post a youtube link, it automatically loads the video in a little box that the person can view without leaving the forum.
Here’s an example from a forum that runs Vbulletin.
September 21, 2011 at 11:00 am #450175I talked with the admin about this today and we looked into using the suggested software however the software we are running is not compatible with the suggested software. A:( However we will be working to make the forum better as time goes on using your input so keep those suggestions coming.

So what forum software are you running? because I’ve never seen it before.
September 22, 2011 at 11:00 am #450177That software that the site runs off of is Windows based, the suggested software was PHP or something like that if I remember right.
September 23, 2011 at 11:00 am #450178I am a little confused here. Fortunately, I have experience with this, lot’s of experience. I manage both SMF and vBulletin forum sites.
I assume when you say that the software is window based, you mean that the server it runs off of is Windows baseed? Otherwise it looks like you may be referring to .NET framework which is similar to active server pages, which is what is being used here. However, there should be some sort of backbone software that was installed for the forums. If we could know what that software is, we could find free add-ons to suggest and/or even make our own add-ons for your review.
The forum softwares available range from free to expensive. Some that can be considered free:
Simple Machines Forum (SMF) http://www.simplemachines.org
phpBB3 http://www.phpbb.com
Some of the better softwares, the ones you will find on the large internet communites are (but do have a cost):
vBulletin ($200.00 plus depending on the package.) http://www.vbulletin.com
IPBoard (Also $200.00+) http://www.invisionpower.com

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I do actually have a lot of experience with this. Here is a vBulletin forum site that I am putting together for public consumption soon>
September 23, 2011 at 11:00 am #450179Also here are some ASP based forums with a lot of the functionality that the members are speaking of. They should be compatible to switch over to quite easily.
October 2, 2011 at 11:00 am #450180The one feature that I would find most valuable would be the ability to retrieve a history of my postings, so I can find them later and see what others have said. It would keep discussions active and open for those who don’t necessarily visit daily.
October 9, 2011 at 11:00 am #450181Can you STOP scrolling up and down? It is so bloody ANNOYING 🙁 Every page opens up and then scrolls down and then scrolls up. I am almost on the verge of giving up on this site. I can not be the only one who is frustrated by this obnoxious behaviour. Please STOP IT.
I am using Google Chrome my broswer and have not tried any other.
