To say I’m excited about the Fairmont build would be an understatement. Over the next few months I hope to get this thing built and running. My goal is to have it running by the ‘Meet Up’. Work begins after I get done traveling.

        Feels like Christmas, doesn’t it?

As far as painting the rims goes, a black rim with a small center cap is going to give you a “police cruiser” look, which I like, but may not be what you want in a sleeper. Keeping the small center cap and painting the rims body colour should tone down the law enforcement vibe. A full tin wheel cover with the black rims will give you the most stock appearance and sleeper camouflage.

This is exciting. How do you decide on the gear ratio of the differential? For that matter, how would you decide the ratios of your transmission, had you not the simple choice of that popular 5-speed?

She’s slowly taking shape , I’d be torn on painting the rims to match the body work , they do look good black , but having them in body colour will give it a more stock look , but the mickey thompsons may give it away , they do look the goods though

Black will make the chrome stand out.

That was covered in the T-5 rebuild video series.

It’s funny how people are focusing on the color of the wheels. Honestly, I’m more interested in how the tires and the rest of the parts are going to perform. I’ll worry about the wheel color after I get it running. Since I have tire equipment, I can always take the tires off to paint the wheels. Till then, they’re going to stay black.

3.55’s are an excellent choice for Fox chassis Fords with a 5-speed manual. Especially when stepping up from 2.73’s or 3.08’s. Heavier SN95 and NE Mustangs and similar are better off with 3.73’s. If there was an automatic in place then a higher numerical gear would be more useful across the board.

For me this is an exciting build. In the late eighties I had a Mercury Zephyr as a daily driver and just before that had one of the good, late 85 five speed Mustang GT’s.

If I had room for another build, I would love to find a nice Fairmont/Zephyr body for such a build.

                        Anxiously watching.
