I replaced my distributor cap in my 69 El camino 350 and now it won’t start, I’m getting spark but it wont fire, although it did start before but I had a few wires missed placed on the distributor cap, got them all in order and then it has not started since. What could be wrong?

Did you mess with the point gap/dwell? Did you change the timing? Also, double check the firing order.

Sorry, the distributor is a breakerless no dwell and never moved the distributor, also the firing order is right, I tripple checked

When you checked for spark, did you do it at the coil wire, or at the plugs?

Did you gently pull upward on the center contact on the rotor so that it can make good contact with the carbon button in the cap? Is the cap seated properly and fully?

Since you have spark at the plugs then I would verify no one has messed up the cylinder locations on the dist. cap, you may just be off one position clockwise or counter clockwise. I have seen plenty of times where someone will pull the distributor to do something like change the intake or install an HEI setup and not reposition it the exact same way so you end up one or more cylinders off. You could just try rotating all the wires one at a time then try to restart it or just place number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke then check if the rotor is lined up with the number 1 cap tower.

I got it guys, I put the number one piston to tdc on the compression stroke and put the #1 spark plug wire were the rotor was pointing and put the rest of the wires where they needed to be. It was something stupid…. not putting the wires where they were supposed to go…

I’ve done that more than once myself. An easy fix though, glad it worked out. Thanks for keeping us updated and for using the ETCG forum.
