Have two questions here. The other I’ll post on engine mods.
My pop has been leasing Chevy tin cans for a while now. The last two models have had and engine cutoff when fully stopped.It then uses the starter after the brake is released. I also noticed a few high end German vehicles doing this too.The lease is almost up and I was kinda thinking about purchasing it. My question is,”Do you think it would be more efficient and less wear and tear if I made a few pcb mods to make it stop a millisecond past ignition of say piston #1. A fractional amount past, so when spark comes the engine cannot spin backward. The reason I ask this, my friend had a tractor from the 20’s or 30’s I think. It was at least 2 cylinders. There was no starter, but, as long as he sent power to the engine at lease once a week, the engine fired right up. After that, he had to turn the flywheel by hand to get it started, though it was not a hit and miss engine. He would never allow me to disect the engine, only thing I remember it had a large weight on the flywheel.
I’m guessing gm is using at the very least a hall effect sensor for timing and so forth. Because it’s a lease, my pop won’t even let me open the hood. SO what do you think? Can I really increase the longevity of the GM throw away motors, let alone the starter and ring gear, or am I wasting my time? I can’t see losing too much oil pressure to create engine wear in a reasonable amount of time, say 2 1/2 minutes, after that use starter.
