I have a quick question regarding new brake pads that were installed on my 2001 Maxima (192,000 miles). Earlier this week, I had new pads installed on the rear of the car (disc brakes). Along with that, the rotors were turned, as well (not replaced). Since then, there has been a whirring/buzzing sound coming from the rear brakes I can hear faintly when the brakes are not applied and can really hear it when the brakes are applied and I’m going under approximately 25 mph. I also have noticed the noise is louder when the brakes are cold. Lastly, there is a fair amount of brake dust all around the outside of the driver side wheel rim, as well as a little bit on the passenger side (not near as much as the drivers side, however).

I do not believe this is an ABS issue because the pedal feel is normal.

Is this normal? I’ve had brakes replaced many times and have never noticed anything like this before. Perhaps it has to do with the turning of the rotors? Does it generally go away over time? Is this something I need to take back to the shop and have them look at? Any advice would be appreciated.

      Thanks in advance.

it could be the abutment clips not seated all the way.
The fact that there is alot of brake dust maybe a stuck
caliper. check out these articles.good stuff.

            Thanks for the replies…

Geo, I’m certain the gentleman running the shop will look at the issue and make any repairs necessary since he just fixed them last week. Quite simply, I want to be armed with a little information before I go in asking him to perform additional work and wanted to make sure this was not something simply associated with new pads.

College, thanks for the link. I did read through the article prior to posting and I know a little bit about brakes, I just have never seen or heard of this happening and thought maybe this is just the friction material “breaking in,” so to speak. I was thinking either the rotors were machined rough, the brake pads were not fully installed correctly, or the caliper was not lubricated properly prior to re-installation. I’m thinking it’s one of the last 2 possibilities…

            Thanks for your input.

Well I actually battled the elements and do have a diagnosis, of sorts. The pads were installed correctly and I was able to get normal movement out of the pins without pulling the caliper off (I was scared to pull it off). The noise is simply a combination of the small “rust ridge” around the outer edge of the rotor which is rubbing against cheap pads. I was able to hear the noise clearly spinning the wheel off the ground.

I am assuming this is not cause for concern? The noise is audible from both rear wheels.

Good detective work. If you have the rust ring I’m
going to suggest new rear rotors and a set of ceramic
pads. If the rotors in the rear are not vented and just
a disk. they are not that expensive.

Is there any harm in leaving it alone? I’m simply curious.

No harm. You will have noise and the pads may wear funky.

Thanks for your help. I’m not going to worry about taking this one back to the shop but I’ll eventually put new rotors on. Thanks again for your help.

Never ever machine your rotors or use cheap brake pads on these cars. They don’t like them. You don’t have to worry it about it now, but eventually make sure you replace your rotors and get better pads.

I went with new rotors and better pads on the front (I did that job myself), but decided to take my car to the shop to have the rears done (did not want to risk getting the calipers off and not being able to get them back on should I not have the tool that worked to turn the caliper pistons in). However, I will say I have put over 100,000 miles on the car and have never replaced the rear brakes… also combined with the fact money was tight… and told the shop owner to use his best judgement on the rotors/pads.

No no no… you didn’t offend at all! I was simply giving a response. I hope my comments did not come across as harsh because I certainly did not mean them that way… my apologies.
