Need to replace both axles?

One of my axle is wore out and I’m planning to replace it. The other one is fine. I was told when replacing axle, both of them should be replaced the same time. Is this true?

Really they should be done in pairs. But you don’t
have to. The down side is you will need to replace
the other side eventually.If you do them together
they will have the same amount of wear time. 😉

Thanks for the inputs. I think I’ll just replace that one axle. I inspected the other one and it still looks good. What I mean when I say “wore” is that the boot is ripped open. I don’t hear any clicking yet, but I bought the car like this and I don’t know how long the previous owner drove with the boot ripped. So I’ll feel more comfortable replacing the whole axle. Also, I’m getting a new transmission so I’m going to get all the work done at once.
