So, my 2.2l OHV L4 1991 Chevy Cavalier has a problem with acceleration. There is nothing mechanically wrong but it makes driving in high-traffic areas a little bit more difficult. I have heard that increasing the size of the air intake is a very good way to improve acceleration. Are there better and more cost-effective ways to increase acceleration or should I buy a bigger intake?

Are you sure there’s nothing wrong with your car? GM sold millions of Cavaliers/Sunbirds/Sunfires over the years. If they had a reputation for not being capable enough to be driven in normal traffic, their sales would have been far less.

Perhaps your 25 year-old engine and transmission need some attention. You can start with dry and wet compression checks. There’s no sense in spending money on golden horseshoes that’ll get put on a lame horse.

Or, maybe it’s a case of you expecting too much from the car. Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Be honest with yourself. Maybe you have the wrong car for what you expect of it.

Pull lots of weight out of the car. That will help.

There’s nothing wrong with the car really, sorry for the confusing wording. I just wanted to increase the acceleration so that it could compete with today’s machines. I also don’t know of any excess weight I could pull from my car since the only stuff in there are my tools and stuff in the glove box. Are there any other solutions?

It’s not going to happen. Those old 2.2’s made about 100hp new and if it’s an automatic it only has a 3 speed. The early 90s were a completely different era in the automotive world. At 225 ponies the 5.0 Mustang was one of the fastest cars that most people could afford.

Any attempt to make your car as fast as modern cars will cost more money and effort than it’s worth.

I mean in normal traffic most vehicles aren’t taking off from the light with the pedal on the floor.
If you’re not keeping up with even today’s vehicles moderately accelerating I’d do a compression test and fuel pressure test.
