Hi, if you can answer this great! If you can’t and you would rather have me post this in the forums please let me know and I will gladly do so. Thanks in advance!
I’m 20 years old and currently work at a VW dealership. I’ve been here for about 9 months. When I first got hired I was told I was going to be sent to VW school to get VW certified. Months passed and all I was told was that my classes were being moved. In fact one time I didn’t get to go because one tech got married and went a 4 week honeymoon. Nothing wrong with that. It took 7 months of me bothering them and asking them to put me in the VW system so I could look up diagrams and torque specs and other things. I got in just last week. And two days before I decided to email the service manager of a Ferrari dealership (since it’s my dream to work on those cars) to ask him what steps I should take to get their. He said that my 9 months of shop experience helps out a lot and that I should focus on electrical diagnostics. He also did say I should stop by and drop a job application since they will be needing new techs I’m the beginning of 2016.my question is. Should I go apply? Also the guy who is teaching me doesn’t show me much. He doesn’t explain anything he sends me off on my own. In fact he had me put a cylinder head back on a routan that I did not take apart and I have never don’t any before.. he took it apart and timed it then told me to out it together. I asked him for help multiple times and he would just like ignore me and keep working on his personal car during work hours. Then he would get mad because I was taking to long… sure it’s not a big job, but not knowing where bolts came from wasn’t helping. I eventually got it done the next day and it ran great!.

I like working here because I’m with cars I enjoy them. I love working on cars but having someone that is supposed to help you not help you is frustrating and that makes me not enjoy working here much…. what should I do? thanks once again for the help!

You dont always get to take things apart As a main dealer you will have to take in most jobs right now i’ve got a Seat ibiza ( VW polo) sitting on my ramp that the customer tried to strip down got stuck and had it towed here with everything he removed just thrown into the back of the car.

Not saying he’s a good mentor but sometimes it helps not to be spoon fed you need to work it out the hard way.

Should be using elsa pro every day if you’re not sure there is a workshop manual for the removal and refitting of every part.

I personally wouldn’t want to work for Ferrari you cant even get most of the cars on the ramp they need to be lifted onto rollers to raise them high enough. you should get good training but saying that VW training is some of the best training going if you have LEAP access there are a ton of modules online you should be doing.

i was finally able to login in into elsapro last week. and i agree with you, i have no problem finishing up work someone else started but i was really stuck, i had no clue and i can honestly say that i needed help. and to me going out on my own like how he sends me most of the time is fine with me, but once again as i said if i am truly stuck and i ask for help i fell he should try to tell me what i am doing wrong….

I had a neighbor who worked for Ferrari after leaving the navy. He said he loved every bit of it. Being a Ferrari tech is on a whole different scale. The level of attention to detail you must have is crucial. He told me the techs there polish their wrenches when they get scratched up if that says anything.
