Ive been researching Subaru Outbacks for awhile now. Im wanting to buy one . . .preferably 2001-2005. But it seems those motors have serious problems with Head gaskets going bad. And even if one was replaced, theres no telling what damage it caused to the engine.
So I need your help guys. I am willing to go for a older subaru, like a ’99 outback. I believe the engines in those are different. The 2.2L seemed to have less problems?
But I have my heart set on a Subaru Outback Wagon. I just do not know enough about the problems they have. I would like to know your recommendations on 1.) What year(s) to look for 2.) How to tell if a Outback has problems like head gasket or ring failure, ect… 3.) Best places to look for them.
Spent numerous hours on Craigslist and i just get bad feelings about it. I know there a great deals that come up on there every now and then but its a risk.
Thank you for taking the time for reading my post B)
P.S. Definitely has to be a Manual. :silly:

Your best bet is to buy a certified used car. They are looked over and any issues are fixed by the dealer and they come with warranties. Buying an older car means you might save money but you will usually pay more in the long run due to maintenance and normal wear and tear on the vehicle. Every car has a potential to have problems but pride of ownership is important. If the owner before you doesn’t take care of the car then it doesn’t matter what engine it has in it.

Eric goes through the basics that can clue you in to how well the car has been taken care of.

Getting a bad feeling should be perfectly normal when looking for a 10+ year old car. Unless it was a little old lady’s.
