Can i use Motor oil (5w30) in my Acura GSR Manual Transmission? Its just temporary till payday but i gotta get to work somehow. I keep rading its ok, then its not, then it is…So can anyone give me a solid truthful answer? I know its BEST to use Honda MTF but like i said, temporary only. Also, how can i fill from up top without jacking up the car? Someone said to remove the VSS Sensor and fill from there. but how would i know when theres enough?

From everything I have found, you can use motor oil temporally. The main issue you will have is the transmission subjects the oil to much higher pressures and shearing forces, so regular motor oil will not hold up and keep the tranny lubed as well. I would say you can, just baby it and change it back ASAP. Also, stop driving it if you notice anything abnormal after you switch it. As for filling it, I couldnt tell you. Long funnel maybe?

Did I say do this at your transmissions risk?

What if he already had it drained for whatever reason and has no tranny fluid in it now 😛

yes i swapped my engine out so honda delaership was too far to walk and no one to give me a ride. Autozone is on the next street over. when i got there, they only carry auto tranny fluid. They looked it up and said, use 10w30. I was a lube tech at Honda and never heard of anyhting like that. So thats why i asked. Maybe its a veteran mechanic trick from the ol’ days. Well it shifts pretty rough… got me to work though. Now i gotta figure a way to fix three codes. 1,14,6. =[

Ok Eric, got the codes fixed, no more check engine light, alternator somehow went bad but it was a brand new one from autozone of course, swapped it for oem honda, bam started right up. Today took it around the block no problem, the rest of the day i didnt start it at all. Just now, it started but it slowly slowly started draining the battery or something but some reason, headlights, radio, cluster, dome light, all started fading slowly until it finally lost idle and died. No battery light, no check engine light….any ideas?

the bad alternator may have killed the battery.
try to recharge it.then have it load tested at
                    an auto part store.

                      load test the alternator?

i went to autozone and recharged the battery, place it in, and it turned over fine.
Pulled the terminal it died. I noticed on my fuse box, the battery 80a fuse is blown. So i went back and bought another and screwed it in. Turned it on and it drove fine. Drove it around the block. Autozone told me NOT to be pulling the terminal to test the alternator. So should my problem be fixed? all light work, no battery light, no check engine light.

Thats not the way to test if the alternator is bad.
after the battery was recharge. You should have had
the battery load tested. keep us posted.

This should really be 2 threads. As for the MTF you can use motor oil till you can get the Honda MTF. BUT you can also use GM Syncromesh and not have to worry about putting the Honda fluid in. I have tried this and it does work. You can fill from the speedo hole but be careful taking the speed sensor out. They can sometimes get stuck and break.

As for the electrical issue ALWAYS start at the battery. Load test the battery and make sure that’s good first. If it is then you can use this test to find the cause of the problem.
