Mystery Noise

Hi car people! I have been hearing this noise coming from what sounds like under the hood and maybe even under the car.

Let me brief everyone. The vehicle is a 2000 Honda Accord SE Automatic 2.3L 4 cylinder engine with 167,000 miles. I have been noticing what sounds to me like a hissing sound under certain conditions. It started as a hissing that would sound twice while accelerating in second gear at around 3,500 rpm. Recently, I have noticed that it sounds once when coming out of a dead stop at about 2,000 rpm. So now it is present under 2 conditions.

I am getting no check engine lights, and there doesn’t appear to be any leaks in the intake tube, exhaust, or vacuum hoses (I am not 100% sure but I seem to believe the problem lies elsewhere). My question for anyone who may have experienced this before is where do I go next? Should I go towards the fuel delivery system? Transmission? As far as the trans is concerned, it was replaced under factory recall at 95,000 miles. The current fluid in there has maybe 12,000 miles on it. I am not certain that it is Honda fluid though and I know that Honda transmissions like Honda fluid. Does anyone on here have any insight on what this issue might be? Thanks in advance!

I would start with a smoke test, that way we can for sure say it’s not a vacuum leak. Whether it be a vacuum hose, intake gasket, TB gasket, etc. There are alot of ways to leak vacuum. Report back.

Noises can be tricky to nail down. Without hearing the noise it’s very difficult for us to tell you what it is. That said, I wrote this article addressing questions just like this. Perhaps there is something in here you might find useful.

Keep us posted on what you find and good luck.

Well it seems that as soon as I reported the problem on here, the noise seemed to subside. I have not heard it in awhile. The car is running fine. Maybe whatever was causing the noise fixed itself. I’ll keep an ear on the situation and relay any developments back here. Thanks everyone for the input!

Could it be possible that the hissing is a very small leak in the cooling system letting out excess pressure? When my s10’s radiator had a hairline crack it hissed but didn’t leak much fluid at all.

It may be your description that’s off. This is a common noise on Honda’s. In particular, check the shields over your catalytic converter.
