My snap on bill is so high I’ve been forced to sell a kidney.

I remember 20 years ago, when people first started a career, family, or new life they struggled. When I first joined the military I made $900 a month. Now people have fake marriages, and a PO box in different cities so they get extra money.

Now people start a job and expect to be able to buy everything and anything they want. Any sacrifice or commitment on their part is just absurd.

I can’t tell you the number of guys I’ve talked to that refuse to do anything other than split rate LOF. They will not buy tools and flat rate is absolutely stupid. The concept of working harder to make more money is as ugly as two men making out.

Again we have a generation that has been taught they are owed something because their parents were blue collar workers.

Maybe I’m just cranky because I sold my kidney to make my snap on payment. A commitment I made instead of going to harbor freight and buying tools I could afford, then purchasing tools as I made more money.

Then again it’s possible I’m more cranky because I had to prostitute myself to pay my cable bill.

I’m confused, you’re upset because you spent to much money on your truck account and now have to pay the bill?

That’s what you took from that? I had to sell my butthole so I could catch street outlaws.

I have to admit that even though we’re typically on the same page, I’m missing your point on this one. If it makes you feel any better, I owe my Snap-On truck account $7400. At least that’s down from my all time high of $13,000 though. He printed me off a sheet that says I’ve spent just under $29,000 since August 2010, and a Kidney should be worth at least that. I’m not sure a butthole sells for more than the cost of having the colostomy bag fitted that accompanies butthole-less people, so I’m not sure if that turned out to be profitable.

Well hang in there, buddy. Keep getting better so you can be faster and more cocky and get more money. Once you’re acknowledged as A level, there’s money there, you just have to become a master of what you do.

It’s rough man. I tell ya, I have a SO guy come to the shop I work at and an SK tools guy. Guess which one has more reasonable prices and which one I frequent? I dedicate 5% of my paycheck to tools. My particular shop has ALOT of shop supplied tools and on top of that, everyone in my shop is cool with sharing tools as there is trust and mutual respect. I forget if you work at a dealer Pitt, but perhaps in the future you may want to consider an independent shop. It’s a whole ‘nother world.

So far all my experience has been dealerships. I’ve been offered jobs at independent shops, but ever accepted because I have no idea how they operate. Training, how they do things that sort of stuff. I’d love to know if you want to share chevyman.

First, you typically get alot of older cars although we get quite a few new(2010-2013) cars at my shop as well. Training varies, sometimes they will just test the waters by throwing jobs at you to see how you perform, other times they will have you work alongside a senior tech. My first day, I was thrown many different types of jobs due to my previous experience….they wanted to test my metal. There is no parts counter like at a dealership, when doing LOF, air filter, fluids etc, you get them yourself. At my shop, things are layed out to make it easy to find. Shop politics and drama is very little…compared to a dealership and you also deal directly with the owner. There is no service manager, only the owner to be your boss. This can be good or bad, depending on how one tends to handle themselves. Some like a bloated bureaucracy. Me, I prefer the owner in the shop and to be able to have 1 on 1 conversations with the guy behind it all. Shop supplied tools, this varies by how old school the owner is and the techs in the shop. Noone is a thief in my shop and other than me, there are only 2 other techs. So alot of the more expensive tools as well as the owners own tools are at our disposal. He is a master tech himself. There is much much more so if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Is it hard to tuRN a lot of flag hours when you first start out? I would be training to be a B tech, how would I get paid if a A tech is training me?

Again, every shop is different and every owner is different. All I can say is, we get constant workflow and it’s not warranty or recall work.

Nice! I think flat rate times need to be reassessed, but I’ve never been offered a job that didn’t lead into flat rate. That’s a beast I don’t think I can avoid.

I think the flat rate system needs a major overhaul for those that do use it.

You sold a kidney? You’ve got to be joking. You could have defaulted, or even declared bankrupcy. Damn……

I was in the same spot. I owed Snap-on over $6K and well, the economy was so rough. I did a buy-back, called their credit center and told them I could not pay the bill and wanted them to do a buy-back. They did, gave me half what I paid for some of the stuff, but I kept most of everything I needed. They won’t finance me now, but oh well, I have learned about debt. In a day I wiped off $6K in debt and it has never showed on my credit report as a repo or anything becaues I did a volontary buy back.

Yeah, one big thing they bought back was my tool box, and well, now I have a Harbor Freight box…. that is paid for.. and it holds my tools very well… and I have both kidneys. Snap-on will never make another $1 of interest off of me again.
