I recently got a new job working as a tow truck driver for a local auto collision shop. after school I work in the shop for a couple hours and then I am on call during the night. I am fairly new to the tow truck still and was wondering if someone could help me with a tow I had the other night or if someone knows of any forums that I could get some help with it.

I had a call from dispatch to impound a 2003 ford mustang. however I was not sure where or how to hook it to the wrecker (we use the wrecker for 98% of what we tow). luckily the car ran and I was able to drive it onto the truck and secure it. but I still cannot find anywhere that would have been decent to hook to. I asked one of the owners of the company and he just said its hard and you have to do what you have to do. I was hoping for a here let me show you.

I got the car back to the impound yard fine (it was only about 1/4 mile) also while I am on the subject are there any other tricky cars that I should watch out for? thanks

I’m guessing by the way you said it that it’s a flatbed truck. On most of your modern cars you have little squares in the front and rear bumpers that you pop out and there is a threaded hole behind it that is mounted to the frame, and you thread an eye bolt into it. The truck should have some in the tool box as every truck I’ve been around had that as standard in their box. For pulling cars up onto the flat I would suggest hooking your chains to the control arms on front or back up as close to the frame mounting point for strength, it’s a pain to get under some cars, but that’s the best bet I’ve found.

At my shop whenever we tow a car we run the chain around the lower control arm. Works every time.
