I’m about to tell you a little, but rather entretaining story about how my engine was completely trashed.

Yes, I still own that 2000 Hyundai Elantra (there’s a couple of forum entries on that car) and to make long story short, I had to change my oil, and I went to a nice shop (in which they were repairing a porsche boxter and a 911 turbo) and got my oil changed from 20w50 to 10w40 (because they told me that my engine would be PROBABLY worn out)

Some days later, I started to hear a weird noise from the engine, and I didn’t gave too much attention, it was coming and going away at random. The sound was like a straight-6 engine from a small truck (you know, diesel toyotas). I didn’t feel any considerable power loss.

Some time later, it was time for another oil change. Also, I swapped the battery and the alternator band. Two days later, I was driving on the highway and hear a little explosion, my engine got seized and started braking heavily the car. I don’t know how, but the alternator fell off and destroyed the band and damaged the crankshaft’s flywheel. I managed to get my car started again just to get home, but couldn’t.

I was towed to the same shop. They started to rip apart the engine, and find out that the crankshaft was trashed due to what appears to be lack of lubrication. the cylinder #2 rod was also damaged. the rod caps of the crankshaft were all worn (the #2 didn’t even existed anymore) The valvetrain was half-burnt. The water pump was almost gone.

So yes, I had to swap the whole engine out. I also swapped the entire suspension, and the grand total was $2000. I could buy a bike whith that same money. Now my new engine is running fine, and have 20w50 again.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy some pictures, so I will post them later…

That doesn’t’ sound like a very good experience. That said, is that the correct viscosity for that engine? If not, you may want to put the correct viscosity in to avoid a similar fate.

Yeah, I might need to check that… I’ve got a couple of numbers ranging from 10w30 to 20w50. Unfortunately I don’t have the owner’s manual. 🙁

I did some checking and the correct oil for your car is 5w30 unless it’s a 2007 or newer in which case it needs 5w20 oil.

How about if is an used engine? Not sure of the mileage of that, but It looked like 25000-50000
Oh, and I’ve seen a post somewhere else suggesting 20w50 for issues with the valve lifters…
              BTW is a 2000 elantra GLS 2.0L

Unless you live in a very HOT climate I would stay away from 20w50.

Looks like it got real hot before it died. Maybe when the alternator fell off or got blown off.
