Does it get better if you let it warm up?
Also I am not sure with this year of escort but can you check the trans fluid? What does it look like?
The more information the better so post anything you can think of

if the car is in park.does the car rev strong?
have you checked the transmission fluid level and
condition? when driving the car are the rpms up?
you may have a trans issue or a clogged cat.
try taking out the o2 sensor before the cat and
take the car for a ride.if power is improved.then
the cat is suspect.also here is a link to pull any
          engine codes.

I remember working on those cars. Not Fords best days. That said I’m with the group in seeing if you can isolate the problem to an engine performance issue or a transmission issue. If you can’t rev the engine on it’s own then it’s likely to be an engine problem. If it functions better when you shift through the gears manually but shifting from 1-3 without putting it in ‘D’ then it may be a transmission issue. You might also check the transmission fluid level and condition. In addition check the oil level and condition. This series of videos may also offer some insight.
