To start this off, The day I replaced my altenator at the end of this past febuary my CEL light came on. I pulled the codes and one was for the coolant temp sensor and the other was a knock sensor. Well due to a vary limited budget I have not replaced any of the sensor’s. Well I have a slightly better budget and today I noticed my temp gauge was rising slightly and I know my radiator is good. (It’s brand new) I decided to drive around for a bit and the temp went down back to normal so the rest of the time I was sitting while the car was idleing I turned the heater on full plast to help it dissipate the heat. My main question here is where exactly is my coolant temp sensor on my EJ22 block?? I have yet to find it and I have asked google many times. I have tried looking behind the engine under the throttle body but I have had no luck yet. For the engine knock sensor I have yet to do anything with it, but ever since I put 89 octane in it; it has not thrown the code. So just before I do my next oil change I am going to put seafoam in it and clean out the combustion chamber. I also plan to do a transmission fluid change and fuel filter change next weekend. So all in all can anyone tell me where the coolant temp sensor is?? and how to get it out?

Thanks in advance! still trying to get my oil filter off that jiffy lube put on when the previous owner did her last oil change…as you guys/girls can tell this car never got much love till now…

i would highly recommend not dumping sea foam straight into the intake of a high mileage engine as peaces of carbon may brake off and clog up your catalytic converter causing more driving issues… this is with my experiences anyway…

as for the temp sensor, i am not sure, it may not be too far from the thermostat, as with both my Buick Century, and Buick Regal, coolant temperature sensor is not far, but this may differ with your vehicle as it is a Subaru.

Thanks College man! I will have to try this vary soon…I will keep you posted on the sensor replacemnt status. Could this also directly relate to MPG falling? Just curious

If the car is not running at the right temp.It could affect fuel
mileage. Are you sure theres not air in the cooling system? That
could give the sensor a false reading.

Possitive, I bleed the system out fully when I did my radiator replacement. It’s been doing this for month’s now, but it’s getting worse. I also have excelent heat when I turn the heater on. I had to do that while idleing the car waiting for my parents to get out of the store yesterday because I noticed my temp slowly rising. Once I turned the heater on and drove around the parking lot temp went back down to normal.

only sometimes…it did it again yesterday while I was waiting for my brother to get out of school..my temp gauge started rising so I decided to turn the ac on. that well turned the fans on and the temp gauge went back down to normal. So I am pretty positive the sensor is failing me and I need to at some point get the sensor replaced.

Unplug the coolant sensor connector. take a paper clip
and bridge the connector. see if the fans come on.If the do
                      replace the sensor.

ok, so I am essentially telling the computer that the engine temp is above what it should be and to turn the cooling fans on. makes sense. just like jumping a computer power supply. I will do that once the weather clears up, thanks College man! much appreciated.
