Hey I got a car that I really love. And have already put 500 or 600 bucks in to it. But it still needs more but not sure what it needs. I have a 1987 Lincoln town car with a 302 and 4 speed auto. Has a almost new cap and brand new plugs, brakes, wipes and a few small things. For the first 10 min of driving it wants to jump at stops and if I don’t hit the gas as soon as I put it in drive it will die. Plus it revs high sometime when stopped. It reved a lot height till I unhock some air sencer that a older tech told me to try undoing till I fix the idle. Somebody plz help me. Any input would be great, thank you

Glad you found the issue. I was going to point out that that engine doesn’t have a MAF but you figured that out. Also the engines of that vintage had issues with the IAC getting gummed up. You might consider cleaning it. One note there however is that at that time Ford was using teflon coated intakes so you need to be sure to use a special cleaner for that when cleaning the throttle body and IAC if you decide to go there. Just tell your parts guy you need the special ‘Ford’ stuff and they should know what you’re talking about. As for the connector, it doesn’t look like it’s been connected in some time. I’d leave it be. Not everything in the wiring harness gets connected, it often depends on the options for the vehicle. It could also be the diagnostic connector but it doesn’t look that way. No matter, I’d leave it be and not worry about it.

Stop back and see us if you have other issues.

Do you know why the 1987 town car has 150 hp with the 302 but the 87 mustang with a 302 has 225? How could I get that kind of power out of my car?

A different cam, higher compression, different cylinder heads, better exhaust, better intake, and a computer program that can run it all. There’s about a million different ways you can go about it. Thing is with a big heavy car like that, more power to the engine won’t always mean better performance. The other side of the equation is the power to weight ratio. Less weight also gives you the feeling of having more power and also better handling.

Trust me, once you start down that road say goodbye to all your money and your girlfriend or wife. I often say if you want to make a fast car, start with a fast car and make it faster. Don’t waste your time trying to make a slow car fast, you’ll spend 10x as much and struggle for any real return.
