My 2012 Sorento Oil Consumption

I have a problem with our 2012 Sorento. It looks like a space shuttle launch. 85k miles, I used a synthetic 5/20 oil. It started this about 6 weeks ago and has gotten worse each week. (Video doesnt seem to work so attaching a photo) I am NOT a mechanic but I think this is perhaps bad valve seals. Trying to get a bead on what repair might cost?

Oh, before you ask, the 100k mile warranty on a Kia is only for the first owner. I aint him 😛

Might start by pulling the plugs and inspect them to see if it only one cylinder or across the board.
Next try a proper compression test.

I failed to mention we took the car in about a month ago for a code P0024. Mechanic said they thought it was a fluke and the oil was a little low (no oil light however). I emailed the mechanic and he says he doubt its a valve seal and could be Oil Control Valve or VVT Solenoid. Is it worth my throwing parts at it on my own?

The p0024 could be caused by a low oil level, if there’s excessive consumption that’s a real possibility. Any sort of oil valving relating to the valve timing system wouldn’t allow oil to enter the combustion chamber.

On both engines it could be piston ring related, unless a valve seal is completely gone, they typically only reveal the oil burning at startup.

I would suggest you started combing through your warranty. It looks like KIA gives the original owners a 120 month 100,000 mile power train warranty.

If it is always smoking I would suggest not driving the car unless you absolutely have to. Oil will quickly foul up catalytic converters which can easily cost several thousand dollars to replace. So keep that in mind if you do keep driving it.

Also keep in mind that with that much consumption you need to monitor the oil level like a hawk.

Either way, it really needs to be properly assessed before it completely destroys itself.

We are out of warranty as previously stated. Im checking the oil every other day. Consumption is slow. Engine doesn’t smoke after than initial gulp of oil it would appear.

Engine rebuilds can easily cost $3000+. Even valve guide seals require the head be removed to remove the valves, but a compression test might help determine if the piston rings are ok.

I just have a quick question. I understand you have an oil consumption issue. Was this going on before the exhaust smoke started? I was just wondering from the excess amount of white I see in the smoke if it’s not antifreeze. You said it was a slow consumption so just another thing to think about.
