Hello Everybody. i have a 1999 V6 Mustang. i bought it a year ago with 86k miles. Now i have around 94k on it. i have 2 main issues that i would like your opinion on. first the simple one. in the morning, or the first start of the day, it takes a few extra cranks to get going. when i turn the key i hear the engine crank. if i keep holding the key it cranks for an extra second or 2 (as opposed to when it starts cleanly)and then turns over. i only have this issue with the first start of the day. the rest of the day it starts perfectly. the second issue is a little more complicated. its a noise coming from what seems to be the engine. it only happens on certain occasions. the way i have reproduced the noise for mechanics is by putting the car in drive and revving the engine up to 1000 rpm. i know its hard without hearing it. im working on getting a good video of it to upload to youtube. i have taken it to numerous mechanics and after all of them wanting a ton of money to rip open the engine to find the noise without a guarantee that they will find it and be able to fix it, i have taken it to the ford dealership. they say that the starting problem is a failing fuel pump and want $1200 for that. even the all mighty dealership doesnt know what the noise is. they recommend a new engine. any help and advice is greatly appreciated!

here is a link to a youtube video of the noise. the noise starts right around 40 seconds in

It’s probably internal engine and that is always pretty bad. I actually had not heard the term “collapsed piston” until the above so I need to do more reading. But once you’re dealing with issues inside the actual engine block it gets serious and expensive fast. Right now on my 94, I’ve got internal engine issues but the car is still usable so I’m putting off the real fix that for me will be a rebuilt engine (or just getting rid of the car). I’m also thinking about making it a low budget track car but that’s just one idea. If I keep the car then sooner or later I’ll need an engine and what I have is not worth rebuilding because of what’s unknown inside the engine versus what I (we) know.

Thats exactly what Ford told me. an internal noise thats not worth looking into and fixing because it has 95k miles on it. they recommended just putting a new engine in. thats probably what ill end up doing once this one fails. any idea how much that could cost? i cant get a straight answer from them

A rebuilt replacement engine for my 94 5.0 is going to run me $3000-$3500 including labor.
