Hello, I have this rather annoying rust spot on my ’02 Mustang (see pics). I just purchased the car last year, and have put off getting it fixed for a while now (Not a good idea). Anyway, I want to get it taken care of, but I’m not sure whether I should take it to a shop or try and repair it myself. From the look of it, the rust has corroded a hole through the outer body but the layer underneath the car feels solid. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

This is something I am working on for my own cars. I have 5 older cars that I maintain including body work. Eastwood is a good resource for materials and videos. The longest lasting repair is going to be removing all of the damage by cutting the rust out and hand forming a replacement patch. Eastwood sells a patch kit that includes a bending tool and several pieces of aluminized steel sheets. They have a great video on creating your own patch and installing it. You will need a mig welder with shielding gas, you can buy one, borrow one, or rent one. You are doing stitch welding mostly and that is really easy. There are many more steps and gear needed to prep for paint. I think the biggest issue with your car will be recreating the paint job. It will be a challenge because of the black detail, still it’s possible.

You can also cut out the rust and use filler or fiberglass but that won’t last and the rust will return. I don’t recommend that even if you don’t plan on keeping the car. (It’s not fair in my opinion to hide damage and sell it)

There is a lot to learn and some specialized equipment needed. A determined DIY can do it.

It’s really your call, if you have the will to learn it and find the equipment to do the job it’s possible. Replacing the metal using proper technique should last the life of the car.

There are other companies that sell the supplies, these guys have everything in one place.
