Muffler Service

Lets just say I am new to muffler service. I recently purchased a direct fit muffler, but upon looking at the one that is already on my ’03 Malibu, it appears that the bolts are welded as well as the pipe contact? What is the best way to go about removing the old one and putting the new one on? Do I need to weld the bolts? The previous one that was purchased I know was a direct fit muffler as well. Is it normal for shops to weld a direct fit muffler? Below are pictures. Thanks in advance for any advice.

That’s not welded. That’s rusted. The only thing that will get that apart is a LOT of big red wrench.

I think that DaFinz is right about the rust. It might take a visit to the muffler shop to get this apart. The flange could be too far gone and it might be easier to just weld the new muffler in to place. I would take it to a professional for an opinion and an estimate. Good luck and stay dirty.

Living in IL…. yea thats all rust… I wouldnt even attempt to remove that without a torch. Id take your car and muffler you bought to a shop and see what they say.

usually about the time a muffler rots out in IL the entire exhaust system is one big rusty mess.
