I am recently out of school and working at a dealership. They have me as a lube tech right now which is not all bad. My problem is how do I advance when they hire new people. I went to school and I want to put my knowledge to the test. What can I do?

This is a question that is similar no matter what industry you work in. What volunteer teachers look for is attitude. At coffee, talk with the vets and try to think of at least one good question every day. Learn enough to make yourself useful, and understand that they are donating their time, doing you a favor. So, bad attitude (even once) is enough for guys to turn their backs on you. Let it be known you want to advance to greater challenges and be careful not to mess up any simple jobs. Learning good fundamentals, such as always checking gaskets and following a mental check list when doing the simple jobs will make the more complicated work a lot easier.

Employers will often hire several rookies and let them filter themselves over the months. It’s not difficult to move forward, but watch out for the minefield of frustrated egos out there.

First, make yourself indispensable. Second, do a great job. Third, go beyond expectations. Fourth, have a great attitude. The service bay can be a money maker for the deallership if the serivce tech takes the time to check items that might be potential problems for customers. If you make the customers happy, your future it assured. Hard work does pay off.
