Hi. I’ve decided to change out my old motor mounts with factory oem mounts on my Honda 1992 civic hatchback and realized that the bolts aren’t so snug on the engine/transmission motor mounts/supports. There looks to be a lot of play between the bolts and where they shoot through into the mounts. Is this normal?

Here’s how it looks like when it was seated…

The shaft of the transmission support look oversize to me.

usually the bolts are snug going in. wearing out from
        movement erodes them.

The bolts that keep the support on the frame seem fine to me. It’s that rod like thing that hangs on the support that’s got me confused. I would assume that the column would have diameter matching pretty close to the size of the hole of the transmission support in which it hangs off of.

You can see from the picture that there’s a good 1/3″ of play going on in there.

Here’s the transmission mount arm that runs to the lower secondary mount.

Make sure it’s inserted all the way. The bolt has a shank on it that should fit snug inside the bore of the mount. Since that mount is cracked, you might want to replace it anyway.

Hiya, just double checked and the shank isn’t snug either. I was told it’s normal and that I just have to tighten the 19mm nut and washer, but I’ll go ask the local dealership what they think to be absolutely sure.

              Thanks!

Update: Still haven’t gone to the dealer today, but I ran into this add on ebay selling an old 93 transmission torque mount. Judging from the picture the nut looks offset as well which leads me to believe the looseness is designed that way. Either that or someone at Honda got lazy. My question now is putting a collar or sleeve on the shank to make it a little more snug and fit a good idea? If so what material would be good enough? I also have seen torque mounts without that bolt maybe it’s interchangeable. Any ideas?

For that side mount in the wheel well it can be a little ‘sloppy’ as you show. That’s not a mount so much as a locator to keep the power train from moving too much. The slop is there so that you can remove the mount without too much difficulty through the wheel well. It should not be that way on the other mounts however.

I have a feeling it will be the same on the ac bracket lower motor mount support on the driver’s side. I’ll double check the two top ones and that one on the rear, but I’m pretty sure those three are snug and are probably the primary support mounts of the motor and trany.

Thanks a lot for the help!

The more I think about it, it would not be a good design to have it fit snug. Snug from the shank of the bolt. But Ok to be snug from the pressure of the nut and washers. If it was snug on the shank, over time they would get stuck and you would have to replace the motor mount every time you took it off. While the rear mount and top mount seem to hold a lot of engine weight. I have always thought of the bottom side ones as more of engine vibration absorbers.

Keep us posted as to what you find. I aways learn the most, when I ask why.

You pretty much describe what I outlined in my last post. I’m glad you got it sorted though.
