Hey everyone,
I need to replace the struts on a 2005 Cobalt. On http://www.rockauto.com, they sell struts by themselves for $70. They also sell a “quick-strut” that has the coil spring attached already for $110. Does anyone have experience using these? Are the new coil springs the same quality as the original? It seems like it might be worth the extra money since it would save me some time. Also, compressing those coil springs can be dangerous…

I installed 4 quick struts on my 2001 Toyota corolla. It’s wroth It. I install myself the suspension whit a torch ranch and the car manual for the amount for torch. The quick struts is getting harder when the temperature is -30 °C. But a 20°C is really comfortable suspension. Then you have a air valve on the strut that permit to take air when It’s over deployed after a big hit in a pot hole at 20 K/h. After 3 kilometer, the strut exit the air whit will It’s in contraction and seem to be broken. After that is good again. For the installation, struts, behind the seat is really the rear suspension that are a little bite harder to unscrews .
February 21, 2013 at 1:55 am #501899most struts are easy,IF you have the correct strut spring tool.
You might find a shop that would change over the springs for a few bux.February 21, 2013 at 2:05 am #501907Well worth it in my opinion! That’s a really good price. Then you get new coil springs, new dust shields and bumpers, mounts and bearings. The cobalts are known for leaking oil and causing the dust shields and bumpers to become unseated from the mount and causing a noise when going over bumps from them sliding up and down the strut rod. So yeah, well worth the extra bit of money to have everything new. Be sure to have the alignment checked after you replace them.
February 21, 2013 at 2:49 am #501916Agree with everyone they are well worth. Quick-strut are the closest thing you can to OEM ride from Monroe. They also have one call eco-matic which are also complete set but they don’t offer the same type of conform as the Quick Strut. But at the same time you need to do some math and thinking. If you car is in excellent shape and you are not planing to change in the next 2 to 3 years go with the quick strut . But if you think you car will not last that long just get eCO-MATICand save some money…Something I forgot to mention quick strut have lifetime warranty. Eco-matic don’t have nada.

February 21, 2013 at 3:47 am #501936Just make sure you’re not getting the cheap strut. Sounds pretty cheap to me for a Monroe quick strut it might be the Econo instead of the Sensa Track
February 21, 2013 at 6:09 am #501990Hey Matt,
Keep in mind that you get a new spring, upper bearing, and mount with the quick strut. If your car has lots of miles these parts might be at the end of there life cycle.February 21, 2013 at 7:22 am #502017If you have the kind of spring compressors that I do, quick-struts seem like a great deal. Too bad clamshell spring compressors are so expensive, they seem a lot safer.

February 22, 2013 at 4:08 am #502199I think it’s WELL worth it. New strut mount, bearing plate, coil spring, boot, seat, and strut for only $40 more than just the strut itself…AND you don’t have to swap over any parts? I honestly have no intention of ever doing the job any other way (unless maybe a mount went bad on a new assembly, but I’ve never had that happen before.) KYB makes a “Ready Strut” now to compete, too.
March 6, 2013 at 1:53 am #504852I think that’s a perfect application for a quick strut. As pointed out you get a lot more than just the strut and in your case that might be the best option.
March 6, 2013 at 2:12 am #504861After reading all the replies,I am sold on the quick strut,I am a fleet manager and somtimes I cant get out of the fix it cheapest mode.
