I own a 2001 Ford Ranger with the 3.0, Its got a misfire the P0305 which some times comes on and does not. Now when i drive once i get around 2.5k RPM or more i feel the misfire go away and power is restored. Im not sure what is going on, The wire is good and so is the spark plug. When i pull the spark plug out it is wet. it also looks like it maybe smoke from the tail pipe and there is moisture but it is winter and cold out so hard to tell. But once i hold it had that RPM smoke does go away, But im confused cause when driving or revving to a high RPM the misfire goes away for a bit, so does more in idle. any advice would be nice thanks.

Oh and i forgot to mention that i did a compression test on cylinder 5 which was 100 PSI and also on cylinder 1 (for comparison) that was at 120PSI. So yeah im still stuck i know 100 psi is low but it also did not drop and i left it on for about 5 minutes or so.

If the misfire is there primarily at idle then try cleaning the throttle body and the idle air controller. I had a misfire on my van that would go away when I pressed the gas peddle a little. I solved it by opening the throttle body plate and spraying some cleaner, letting it sit for a few minutes then wiping it dry (repeat a few times but not enough to flood the engine) the cleaner also made its way into the IAC ports. Make sure you allow everything to dry before starting it up. Best of luck.

Does the wet plug smell like gas? you really need to be able to look at live data and see what your fuel trims are. see if one bank is running rich or lean. As for your compression check you need to do all the cylinders to get good comparison. theres so many other things it could be besides spark plugs, wires or fuel injector.

I cant tell if plug smells like gas or coolant. But now i am noticing exhaust gases in the coolant (or i think it is) it is bubbling and giving me a no heat issue. I don’t seem to be losing coolant cause after the coolant flush i had 4 gallons to put in i still have 1 and a quarter coolant left. The oil is clean and not milky at all. I’m just stupid and the miss fire comes and goes. I’m still thinking head gasket but not sure

                1. Check for air in the cooling system and purge it out. Eric has a good video on taht.
                2. Check for vacuum leaks (Eric also has a vid for that) especially hit the misfiring cylinder by the intake manifold and injectors. Good luck.

Let us know how it went.

After thinking on this and test a few more things im pretty sure the head gasket is gone, i just done have about $3,000 to get it fixed and i have had this truck since 2007 and was my first vehicle. If there is any one that would like to help i do have a go fund me account. just wondering if any one could help thanks.

Did you do a compression test to make sure it is in fact the head gasket? It would suck to throw a bunch of money at it and not have it fixed :(. You have spark in cyl 5? I would also check for vacuum leaks (intake manifold gasket) around cyl 5, as iManuEl suggested.

Sorry i though i posted more of an update, I know im getting exhaust gases in the cooling system cause the over flow will bubble or just over flow. I can smell exhaust gases when i open the radiator cap. The misfire comes and goes some days its very noticeable some days just a little. But not having heat or intermittent heat sucks when its only single degrees out side. yes i would hate to spend money for something its not. I have also swapped cyl 5 fuel injector just in case with a known good one gasket for upper-intake is new and good. some im pretty sure on the exhaust side the head gasket is broken. also for compression test i only test cyl 5 and cyl 1. Cyl 5 was 100-psi and Cyl 1 was 120-psi.
