The EGR picture that I cleaned today. I spray carborator cleaner into those 2 holes and I saw dirty came out… remove dirty and carborator with paper.
Here is my big question… Do you guys think those two holes can be clog up go back up to intake?
the intake was removed and services when the car at 100,000 miles. cleaned everything but I have not cleaned inside EGR two holes. Today, I did sprayed carborator cleaner in those 2 hold picture above..
After I cleaned the EGR, I reset ECM. this time the car check engine light flash 8 times and went off. I went to Auto Zone pull the code, it said I had P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306 and P0300 (random misfires).
the code P0172 went away after spray carborator cleaner into those 2 holes EGR.
Forgot to mention, I did clean the EGR itself, too.
Air Cleaner has a big crack… see attached pic.
December 24, 2011 at 11:00 am #449406last pic, body thorottle cleaned today while I am the same spot.
Now, I am confuse what can be other cause the misfires…. Can injection or fuel pressure cause the misfires code?
December 26, 2011 at 11:00 am #449407I think you misinterpreted what I was suggesting. Cleaning the EGR valve will do nothing really as I don’t often see an issue there. What I was suggesting is that you remove the upper plate in the intake and clean out the ‘ant farm’ which is the EGR passages that go to the individual cylinders. You probably had the misfires you did because you loaded up the intake with cleaner and the engine probably didn’t run right till that cleared out. Remove the upper part of the intake and clean out those EGR passages and see what you get.
The tear in the intake hose is not a good thing but it won’t cause a performance problem however I still recommend you replace it and try not to tighten the clamp too much as it can cut the hose in a similar way as yours in the pic.
December 26, 2011 at 11:00 am #449408ERic,
Please clear something that I am not familiar on this car EGR passage.
“What I was suggesting is that you remove the upper plate in the intake and clean out the ‘ant farm’ which is the EGR passages that go to the individual cylinders.”
I have a follow up question for you Eric.
When I removed the UPPER COVER there is a gasket, if I understand from you previous message EGR passage on this 2004 Model. I saw there were 6 small holes on the UPPER COVER when I removed the gasket and Upper Cover. I cleaned those 6 holes. ARE THOSE 6 holes EGR Passage?
Or I have to completetly removed INTAKE MANIFOLD to see EGR Passage sit underneath the INTAKE MANIFOLD?
What the EGR passage look like size of the HOLD? EGR small hold or big hold?
December 26, 2011 at 11:00 am #449409Have you seeing the passage that go to EGR valve clog or need to be clean out, too? What do you suggest while I am at the same spot…
Now, I remember that probably forgot to clean out the EGR passage on the Upper intake when I did removed completely off the Intake Manifold. suck… but I did spray carborator cleaner on the passage go back to EGR valve. the hold passage go to EGR passage was not clog up at all. look good but a little dirty but I spray carborator to help clean better.
I did reuse the Intake Manifold gasket…and Eric, do you think it is safe?
December 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #449412EGR links with detail pics…
December 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #449410Yes those holes and the passages in the part that you removed (looks like an ‘ant farm’) are the EGR passages, sorry if that wasn’t clear before. You can reuse the gasket jut make sure you install it correctly, I normally make sure all the holes line up before I reinstall the cover.
December 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #449411Thanks for taking your time to explain in details…
ERic,
I follow your advices, today, I removed the Upper Cover plate and completely removed Intake Manifold off the car again. This time, I discovered the EGR port (big hold) on the Upper Cover plate. To see the EGR port (big hold), I have to remove the metal tube with 2 bolds that hold down the metal tube. I also cleaned the metal tube with spray carburetor. If I didn’t removed the metal tube with 2 bold, I would not discovered the EGR port (big hold). the EGR port (big hole) was dirty, but not completely clog up at all. I sprayed carburetor cleaner and it did the trick. now, it looks clean and no more clog and dirty on the EGR port (big hold) on the upper intake plate. you have to removed the upper cover then you have to remove 2 bold that hold the metal tube (from the right if you stand in front the engine) before you can see EGR port (big hold).
Updated…
So far I test drove the car in highway about 105 miles, the Check Engine Light has not came back yet. Tomorrow, I have to bleed the cooling…and tested drive more to see if I win this battle Check Engine Light.
I’ll share the pics EGR port (big hold) tomorrow..
December 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #449413Check Engine light misfire all 6 cylinders (P0301,P0302,P0303, P0304,P0305,P0305,P0306) and P0300 (random misfires) came back again. THIS TIME NOT P0172 CODE.
I though the battle has been over with Check engine light, but I guess not. Tomorrow, the car goes in shop @ 7:30 A.M…. Man, I thought I fixed the CEL issued with test drove the car 105 miles.
What can be? More confuse…
December 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #449414Have you tried the power balance test? Those coil packs sometimes go bad and cause a miss and the computer isn’t smart enough to pick out a specific cylinder so it will set codes for all of them, I’ve seen this a few times.
December 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #449415ERIC,
I have replaced all 6 coils with new coils. have you seeing new coil goes bad? I am totally confuse…
December 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #449416I’ll try again tomorrow remove per coil pack to see engine RPM change.
December 29, 2011 at 11:00 am #449417Ok guys, today the car is in shop. the service guy told me the time belt was one 1 teeth off that cause all 6 cylinder misfires He told me, the hydraulic tensioner perhaps can’t hold the time belt; therefore, the belt loose 1 teeth off. the mechanic did compression test, verify cylinder 4,5,6 has 250..and cylinder 1,2,3 has 200… he said the compression goes back to 250 after time belt in alignment.
My big question is…since the CEL (check engine light) with all 6 cylinder misfires came up… drove the car like that for test drove…and verfy the check engine light…
can that cause damage to the engine?
mechanic verify the fuel trims, OK.. he also, said the fuel pump ok and fuel injector, OK and COIL pack OK… he asked me what I have done to the car…and I told him..and he look more…in time belt ..then he found the problem…
Updated more later….
December 29, 2011 at 11:00 am #449418Interesting I did not consider that. If all of your readings are OK then you’re probably fine, I wouldn’t go looking for a problem where there isn’t one.
December 29, 2011 at 11:00 am #449419I’ll ask them to recheck compression after the job done.
Eric, you think the engine still be fine? not plan to look for more problem if everything ok
