Metal shavings in oil

Just changed my oil on 05 dodge magnum hemi. Only 3 quarts came out (should have got 6 or so) and I have some metal shavings in the oil as you can see in the photo. I put Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer per the instructions along with Mobil one 5w-20 in the engine.

Do I have any chance at this fixing the problem or is this the beginning of the end for the engine? The car runs and sounds great and I don’t have any warning lights. It has been 5400 miles since my last oil change and there were no metal pieces in that oil. I know I dropped the ball on not checking my oil level regularly. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

With chunks that big im thinking a crank bearing possibly but i would get it checked out now don’t wait.

Right now its running fine and probably salvageable.

Is that something they can do without dropping the engine? What kind of price tag am I looking at? The car is only worth 5 grand. I may just sell it and disclose the problems.

Its one of those issues that you wont know what the cost will be till you get a look at it to see how much damage there is.

As far pulling the motor i know people that have gotten away without pulling it but if it lasted i have no idea.

Again we don’t know for sure its the bearings.

I can’t tell from the photo what the chunks are?
I’d cut open the oil filter and check it too, then spray the oil off the chunks with brake cleaner to see if they are aluminum, plastic, rubber, copper, steel, or lead?

I cut the filter open on a new engine and it was pretty good, but had a few small RTV bits and vary small piece of paper shop towel in it.

I plan to do this on my old Jensen, and I’m almost expecting to find bits of valve stem seals and timing chain nylon teeth in the filter.

I sprayed these pieces from the oil drain pan off with brake cleaner. It is definitely metal. Im guessing it’s aluminum because it is pretty brittle, but I’m just guessing. The car is going to the shop tomorrow or Tuesday. I’ll give them the old oil and filter.

That color and texture doesn’t make me think of aluminum. Looks like rusted steel to me.

That looks pretty odd if it was in the oil? It does almost look like rust, but I’m thinking it might be gasket material?

When I got home from work (40 minute highway drive) I decided to drain the oil while it was hot. After most the oil came out, I went to remove the filter and it was on there good. I had to use an oil filter wrench and a small make shift breaker bar (because of space) to break it loose. It took at least 10 minutes and I definitely was bumping into the frame and whatever else in the process. There is a decent amount of rust under the car… maybe I will get lucky and that’s what is in there.
