Was pulling mountain in 5th (manual trans) in my 08 Mustang GT (Bullitt) with AC on at 60 mph and after 5 minutes of hard pull (engine was not straining) started getting metal “clanging” noise from front (engine area). Did not seem like valve knock and went totally away once I topped the mountain. Noise did reduce when I shifted to 4th and slow down some but did not go away until I crested the hill (mountain). After that sound never came back even when pulling steep (but shorter) inclines. Should have turned off AC during noise but did not think of that at time. Noise never got too severe but did think about pulling over but a bad place to try to stop. Felt like something was loose under hood. I am wondering if belt tensioner was acting up under heavy load. No check engine lights, no loss of power, no engine stumble, no change in gauge readings. Have not been able to recreate the sound since BUT have not pulled that long of a steep grade since at 60 in 5th with AC on. Was running 87 octane gas (which is fine in Bullitt). I’ve checked under the hood and find nothing loose (that I can tell) but will let a pro look at it this coming week. Fluids fine and oil (Valvoline 5-W30) has less than 2,000 miles on it. 65,000 miles on car. Again, did not sound like internal issue or valves. Did have intake gasket replaced 6 months ago to solve vacuum leak/check engine light issue. Ideas?

The only thing you can do is try and replicate the noise and turn the ac off and see
if the noise goes away or not. You could check heat shields for looseness.

I will be trying to duplicate the condition later in the week and see if the noise returns. I want to check some more for something loose and also have a pro mechanic just look at it and see if he sees anything I am missing. For the 1st five minutes of the pull (going up the mountain at 60 in 5th with AC on), no noise then it started. Within 5 more minutes I had crested the top and noise went away and nothing since. I love this car and want to fix the “problem” but do it without hurting the car (more?). I know you know what I mean.

The clanging noise was not repetitive. It was loud but random sounding. I went out and checked the car more closely this afternoon and find nothing wrong. So, it looks like I need to see if I can get it to duplicate the noise when the engine is pulling hard.

I used to have annold pickup that made sounds like yours when climbing up a mountain road. Turned out some of my oil valleys were clogged and the front cylinders were oil starving.

The only metal sounds now are thanks to Judas priest and Ozzy Osborne.

I appreciate your post and sure hope that’s not the problems with this car. But you never know. I’m having it checked by a pro on Wednesday morning then later that day I may try to duplicate the condition and see if the noise returns.

Problem seems to be heat shields near catalytic converter. Tapping them made the same resonance we were hearing in car. They were not loose but one definitely made more noise when tapped. So, re-bent them slightly. Then found the closest mountain which happens to be the pull from the NC border to Galax VA on I-77. And we got the noise to repeat but much less and only at certain RPMs during hard pull. My original post said noise coming from under the hood, but this time did more checking and realized it was coming from under the car. Feel confident that no damage is being done to anything. Apparently, the shields super-heat during a hard pull (makes sense they would be their hottest) since engine is working hard and pumping out a lot of exhaust. Closing this case as solved.

And I should add that College Man was correct! Thanks!
