Well it all depends on the type of driving you do. Do you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic? Do you take short or long trips? Have you replaced the fuel filter? Do you beat on the car (constantly floor it)? Do you let it idle for extended periods of time?

But if you do mostly city driving considering it’s a 97 it’s getting good mileage at 22MPG. The site I’m looking at shows 24MPG city and 34 Highway in the 5spd manual. Here’s the link http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/13484.shtml

        Hope that helps!

Yeah so 22 MPG is fairly decent for that mileage and type of driving. But try the fuel filter and just look for any vacuum leaks.

My van is expected to get around 17MPG in the city and I drive 5 miles to work and that’s what I get.

I think you’ve gotten all you can get out of it. Remember that the engine is older and as a result the compression isn’t as good as it was when it was new. I’d say be happy with your 22mpg and move on.
